ser Edgarth Hayford
ser Edgarth Hayford, Duke of the lands East of the Hespeaks
Mechanical Information
When he was nine years old he lost both his mother and his older sister Maedelyn to The Sickness, a plague which spread throughout The Kingdom of Somercrag.
Following the death of Duke Brennar in 441KS and his alleged role in the death of ser Sola Somercrag, ser Edgarth became a Ward of ser Edam Bracks and his home of Haycastle was seized by the crown to create House Hespeak.
When ser Tyon launched his Revolution of Somercrag later in the same year Edam was serving as Castellan of Haycastle for ser Mitchar Hespeak, son of the Queen, who had already been captured by Tyon's forces during the Tourney at Faircastle. When Tyon's forces captured the capital and slew Queen Malina Somercrag Haycastle was one of the last Royalist holdouts, with Edam holding Edgarth hostage. However, following the arrival of Tyon's forces and negotiations led by ser Allon Southbay, Edam and the defenders of Haycastle surrendered and turned Edgarth over to the revolutionaries.
Duke Edgarth has also fostered close relations with some individuals outside his own lands, especially ser Allon Southbay of Southbay and ser Carreth Conklyn of The Clerewood.
Following the Tourney at The Hollow to celebrate King Tyon I's ascension to the throne, at the suggestion of his aunt Lady Ophelia Foxworth-Hayford and Lady Laycie Sawler, the King's Chancellor, ser Edgarth began courting with Kay Percier, the daughter of the Lord of Quarrystone. The pair were married in 443KS and welcomed their first child, Madalin Hayford in the following year. They had another child, Matthis Hayford in 447KS.
When King Tyon I Cray forbade the war and decreed the Foxworths' aggression against the neighbouring Kingdom to be treasonous, Edgarth pledged his armies to his aunt's new cause - secession from The Kingdom of Somercrag.
Their first major battle was at Conn, a castle guarding a bridge on the border between The Hayford and Southbay Duchies. Despite valiant effort by the young Duke and his knights, their initial assault was repelled by the defenders. They retreated back across the bridge to prepare for a protracted siege, but no sooner had they begun their siege camp than the ground was shaken by a powerful shaking of the earth, collapsing the bridge and filling the river below with debris, preventing any crossings and forcing the Hayford armies North to Westlake.
Several skirmishes were fought around the banks of Westlake, but the Hayford forces finally managed to cross to Nordbank in The Green. There Edgarth met with Lady Sigveldt Brume and her husband ser Rolf Brume-Locke. They had abstained from involvement in the war until this point, but with the death of ser Rolf's father ser Tearlach Locke at the hands of King Tyon I Cray, ser Edgarth was able to convince them to join the Secessionist cause.
Just days after their departure from Nordbank the Hayford army was ambushed by House Blackwood of Westlake, springing forth from the cover of the forests which hemmed the Western shore of the lake under cover of darkness. They managed to repel the attackers, and even took a prisoner, Anabes Blackwood-Justmann, the wife of Shela Blackwood who had led the attack. The captive killed herself however with Chokewine.
Fighting on the fringe of Wyldwood continued, with the arrival of several more Southbay Duchy armies pressing the Hayfords hard, and leading to a disastrous rout. As Edgarth's army broke around him, and even his Household Knights broke in the face of a furious charge by the Blackwood troops and their savage Minmoths, the young Duke found himself in the sights of the bereaved and vengeful Lady of Westlake.
His knights rallied and fought back to his side, but it was too late. They captured Shela Blackwood and brought ser Edgarth's body back to camp.
