ser Ashtin Phyrefenn
Personal History
Early Life
Ashtin was born to ser Mayra Phyrefenn-Condon and Tarik Phyrefenn, the younger brother of Hayana Phyrefenn. In 419KS Hayana was knighted by their mother, and Ashtin began serving as her Squire. However this service was cut short when a bandit attack led to the death of ser Hayanna. Following this Ashtin's training was taken over by ser Broden Slynt, then heir to North Keep. Ser Broden knighted ser Ashtin Phyrefenn on his twenty-first birthday.
Ser Ashtin then spent some years as a Hedge Knight, occasionally serving House Phyrefenn of Eastgate, or his mother's house, House Condon in The City of Bayglen.
The Irogonie Aggression
As the armies of The Kingdom of Somercrag mustered to march against The Irogonie Aggression, ser Ashtin's mother used her connections in the capital to arrange for her son to join the defence of the City under the command of ser Mitchar Somercrag.Following a battle at Allerton ser Ashtin rode with ser Mitchar to take control of the city while Mitchar's sister, ser Sola Somercrag, investigated the trouble in The Hayford Duchy.
House Hespeak of Haycastle
Following the death of ser Sola Somercrag and the implication of Duke Brennar Hayford in her killing, the lands of House Hayford of Haycastle were siezed by the crown, and House Hespeak of Haycastle was created as a Cadet Branch of the royal household, led by Duke Mitchar Hespeak, formerly ser Mitchar Somercrag.Ser Ashtin swore his sword to Lady Raina Hespeak, Duke Mitchar's wife.
When Mitchar attended The Tourney at Fairstrand 441KS later that year, Ashtin and Raina remained in Haycastle. However Mitchar was captured by forces sworn to ser Tyon Cray as the opening act of The Revolution of 441KS. As he had been instructed by the Duke before his departure, ser Ashtin turned over command of the castle to ser Edam Bracks, and escorted the Duke's wife out of Somercrag by way of Stivir. They settled in Lionsguard, in southern Baycotte, to escape out the civil war that tore The Kingdom of Somercrag apart, and wait for word from the Duke or his brother Prince Dalran Somercrag that it was safe to return.
Lionsguard
Word of House Somercrag's victory over the rebels never came. Instead, Lady Margaret Stivir's letters became more and more dire, eventually telling of the murder of Queen Malina Somercrag at the hands of the usurper ser Tyon Cray. The Queen's sons were banished to Distant Lands and The Kingdom of Somercrag's treacherous Dukes and Duchesses recognised King Tyon I Cray as the new King of Somercrag.
On the first day of 442KS, while The Kingdom of Somercrag was busy celebrating the coronation of its new King, Lady Raina Hespeak gave birth to Elayne Hespeak, her daughter with ser Mitchar.
Eventually news reached ser Ashtin that Teressa Volmark, the Hillhurst-born Captain of The Flyer, had made port in Stivir carrying members of The Kingsguard of Tyon I Cray on its way to The City of Southbay. The Captain was also carrying A Map of Blackfyre Gulf, a previously uncharted area to the far East across the The Mirror Sea.
Over the following years, ser Ashtin attempted many times to arrange for himself, Lady Raina and young Elayne to leave Lionsguard and travel to The Continent of Amoth, following the map of Blackfyre Gulf as the only clue to where the heirs of House Somercrag of Bayglen may have ended up, but each plan he made was thwarted by some happenstance, from the flooding caused by a sudden cracking of The Great Grinding in 443KS, to the sudden demand placed on all available ships by the Somercrag Rescue Effort of 448KS, inevitable bouts of illness brought on by the hostile environment in Lionsguard, to the sudden reinforcement of The Howl by House Greydall of The Peak.
Finally, in the closing months of 453KS ser Ashtin was able to put together a plan which succeeded in transporting the three out of The Continent of Greland and across the sea, no longer becalmed, to The Continent of Amoth.
