The Swamps of Baycotte
Baycotte, also known colloquially as 'the flood' and 'the drowned lands' is the name given to the expanse of swamps and floodplains that make up the South-Western part of The Continent of Greland.
Being on the Western coast, Baycotte suffers the most from The Dancing Sea's volatile tides. It is also home to Greland's longest river, The Branching Serpent, which often breaks its banks as it carries meltwater from The Witwell Mountains. As a result the vast majority of the region is made up of swamp.
There is also a stretch of dense tropical forest in the Eastern stretches of the region, as well as an area in the South where, rather than soft swampland, the region gives way to ground frozen hard from its proximity to The Great Grinding.
The people of Baycotte, referred to as 'Swampers' are generally thought of poorly by outsiders, regarded as a muddy, dirty folk who use tricks and dark dealings in their interactions with the kingdoms. This is partly due to the region's resistance to invasion - with the courses of roads and rivers constantly changing in the face of floods it can be nearly impossible for an outsider to cross the swamps and rainforests. As a result, few Baycotte folk integrate with the Kingdoms of Greland. Similarly, few if any people leave the settled Kingdoms for life in the swamp - High Hill is a notably tragic exception.
