Drifoote

Drifoote is one of several settlements that sit around the outer edges of The Swamps of Baycotte. It marks the last sufficiently solid ground for building on before the grasslands of the southern Lamas Plains give way to the boggy clay of the swamps.

Once it would have served as an important node in a trade network that connected The Kingdom of Rotheval and the Plains to the North, through Timberreach, to settlements along the base of The Witwell Mountains and Southern Irogonie. Since The Destruction of Timberreach, however, travel South has been limited, and the Town has become more reliant on exporting its raw materials North instead.

The town is defended by The Drifoote Garrison, led by Commander Ash Mollen.

Government

The town was governed until 455KS by The Ancient and Esteemed People's Council of Drifoote. Despite the lofty name, the council was mostly a grouping of the town's various landowners and heads of businesses with very little formal organisation. They met in The A&EPCoD Guildhouse at the close of each season - ostensibly to discuss matters affecting the town, but more often in actuality to share fine foods and drinks bought in trade or taxed from merchants passing through.

Following ser Allon's conquest of the town in January of 455KS, the town is governed by The Council of High Hill, or 'New A&EPCoD', as many of the town's residents call it.

Defences

The town is encircled by A Wooden Palisade, which is itself ringed by Defensive Ditches. Defence of the settlement is overseen by Commander Ash Mollen from Drifoote Town Watchhouse, which straddles the main road South out of town into the swamps.

Industry & Trade

Drifoote Logging Camp and Drifoote Clay Quarry, both South of the town proper, supply raw materials to the town or for export North and West to The Lamas Plains and Rotheval respectively.
The Drifoote Market Hall is home to a number of craftsfolk, including Duncas' Clothiers, who is supplied by the nearby farms, and Taryne's Forge & Shoppe, which imports raw materials to meet the needs of the townsfolk.
The changing nature of The Branching Serpent has made establishng river trade routes tenuous at best, but the town has a Drifoote Trade Jetty and Warehouses for times when such trade is possible.

Guilds and Factions

A form of The Church of the Stormwyrm has a relatively strong presence in Drifoote, albeit one with several beliefs and practices that differ from the practices codified by The Abyssal Codex and practiced within The Kingdom of Somercrag.

History

In January 455KS ser Allon Stormborn and his army arrived at Drifoote. Ahead of the main force ser Allon and His Band of Heritor Knights rode to the entrance to the town to Parley.

After a brief exchange of words made it clear that The Ancient and Esteemed People's Council of Drifoote aka A&EPCoD would not join his cause willingly, ser Allon asked if any man on the walls would settle the matter in a duel, hoping to spare the Town Watch, made up as it was of mostly the very young or very elderly, from the undoubtedly swift and brutal victory his army would bring if they marched on the town the next morning.

Ash Mollen, Commander of the watch, answered this challenge. Out of respect, Allon knighted him before the duel began. The duel itself was swift and brutal – ser Allon was a veteran of many tournaments and several wars, and could be argued to be one of the finest swordsmen in the entire continent. After briefly crossing blades, ser Mollen was left in the dirt, disarmed, and yielded.

As Nigel and Jorvan attended to ser Mollen’s injuries, the Heritors swiftly swept through the town and arrested the council. For their greed and failure to provide for their people, ser Allon had the majority exiled and their developments seized - an echo of his actions against the landlords in The City of Southbay. Taxmaster Ireyne tried to abscond with the town’s wealth but was captured and for her more dishonorable conduct was executed by Allon with his black sword.

ser Talesin Tarbor was placed in charge of Drifoote as its Mayor and ser Allon's Steward, with ser Mollen as his Justicar and a raven sent to High Hill for Lady Ophelia Buckhaill to come to the town and serve on its new Council as a Seneschal.
