Sjorgús Mountains

Paheiríenic: Sjorgús /sjɔːrguːs/
Navalede: Sorgús /sɔrkuːs/
Sikíronian: Sorkus /sɔr̥khʏːs/
The Sjorgús Mountains1 are the longest mountain range in Adynía, forming the border between Nemirkía, Núrak and Larúnas on one hand, and Zirdinóin, Marissía and the Þatal Plains on the other.
The region has served as a buffer zone between the powers on the either side, as the mountains are considered sacred and dotted with ancient temples and Snake Monasteries. Many of them have been laid to waste by Dragons or abandoned over the last five centuries, especially to the west.

History

The Sjorgús Mountains have been inhabited for millennia, first by mostly elven hunters, goat- and cowherds -ancestors of the modern Paheiríen-Elves- and later the easternmost region was settled by dwarves migrating from the Wild Mountains, ancestors to the modern Gartaraz-dwarves and Dúnaraz-dwarves.
The mountains became an early religious center of the people living the region, especially elven cultures to the south and west, with shrines and altars found nearby virtually every peak, cave, spring or waterfall, and many went on pilgrimages to these places to gain blessing from the gods. Some of the earliest major snake monasteries developed in the region, where Snake Oracles give prophesies to travellers through visions gained by ritual dancing and the bite of a certain species of snakes, a tradition which is known throughout Adynía.
Much of the region was devastated when dragons from across the sea scoured the western mountains some five hundred years ago.

Geography

Seen from above, the mountain range roughly form the shape of a sickle, with the easternmost part forming a short handle and the blade curving first to the northwest, then westwards and gradually pointing south.
Traditionally, the mountains are made up of three regions; Paheiríen to the west, Gartaríen to the east and Dúnaríen in the Jóal Plateau to the far east, separated from Paheiríen by Svarkó Pass. The pass is the only easy way over the mountain these days, connecting the Sikíron Empire to the Kingdom of Marissía.
Many of the major rivers of Adynía originate in the Sjorgús Mountains: Nanave in southern Núrak; Geþrus, Helkan and Þerles in Nemirkía; Sjatúl, Híal, Níaþan and Taþyrin in Marissía and Zirdinóin, and Lírúl in Larúnas.
Summers are generally warm, especially to the southwest, while winters are cold and experience heavy snowfall, and avalanches are a real threat in mountains.

Fauna & Flora

The wildlife in the Sjorgús Mountains is mostly characterized by mountain goats, bears, martens, marmots and ptarmigans, but the most distinctive species is undoubtedly Pegasi. These winged equines are endemic to the mountains, and have become quite rare since the dragons appeared.
Common trees include oak, maple and ash at lower altitudes, birch and pine higher up, and in the southwesternmost part one can find chestnut trees and beech as well.
