Character Creation

Follow this procedure to build yourself a character.
Beware that the GM may modify this to make things fit better into the setting he had in mind.
It does'n make sense to give you iron weapons if you are the last remnants of a nomad clan of hunter-gatherers that only use stone tools.

1 - Develop a Concept

Just with your imagination, how do you picture your character?
  • How has he managed to survive so far?
  • Would you say your character is more focused on his physical, social or mental aspects?
  • What does he do for a living?
If you don't have a clue, we suggest you skip to the 3rd step, check the character archetypes, and then go back to step 2, and proceed normally.

2 - Select your mutations

If you want to know more about mutations, check out the Mutation System.
Each mutation has a cost in Gene Points.
You have only 2 Gene Points to spend in mutations at character creation.
This leaves you some room for development during gameplay.
Select mutations that make sense with the concept you have in mind.
Can you pick random ones? Of course you can. Nonetheless, it is quite probable that your mutations had a lot to do with the path you chose in life.
Some of them have prerrequisites, so if you see one you like, check for prerrequisites in its article.

Follow the links to the articles to get more in depth details.

Each archetype has a list of default starting gear, you can add that to your inventory in your character sheet.
If you get 1 or more Weapons, don't forget to write down its stats in your character sheet.
If you get some armor, you should put it in your character sheet too.

Edges are some types of special powers or advantages your character has.
By definition, each character can attempt whatever it pleases by using his Attributes and Skills, and through experience there is a lot of freedom to allocate attributes and skills. Edges, on the contrary, give each archetype its distinctive seal and personality.
Below you'll find a list of all edges by Character Archetype, sorted alphabetically.

4 - Assign your Attributes

Attributes are classified in Physical, Social and Mental ones.
You have a number of levels to distribute among your Attributes.
You must prioritize among physical, social and mental.
  • You get 4 levels to distribute among the Attributes of your 1st priority.
  • You get 3 levels to distribute among the Attributes of your 2nd priority.
  • You get 2 levels to distribute among the Attributes of your last priority.
When choosing your Attributes, think of what kind of things your character will be doing the most, and what makes synergy with your current edges, and edges you may use in the future.

5 - Assign your Skills

Skills are classified in Physical, Social and Mental ones.
You have a number of levels to distribute among your Skills.
Depending on how specialized or balanced you want your character to be, you now must choose one among two types of level distributions for your Skills:
  • 6 / 4 / 2
  • 5 / 4 / 3
Once you chose your distribution, prioritize which is more important for your character concept: Physical, Social or Mental, and distribute your skill levels according to the distribution you chose, assigning the top value, to your top priority, the middle value to your 2nd priority, and your lower value, to your last priority.

When choosing your Skills, think of what kind of things your character will be doing the most, and what makes synergy with your current edges, and edges you may use in the future.

6 - Derivative stats

Calculate your Parry, Dodge and Toughness values, according to the Derivative Stats rules, and your max helath and fatigue levels, according to whats explained in the Fatigue and Damage and Wounds articles.
If you are using the digital character sheet, these things will be automatically calculated for you, so you can move on.

7 - Flesh it out

Probably, while you were progressing in the character creation, your initial concept developed further, or it may have suffered drastic changes. Don't worry, just tell a story about your character.
  • Tell a defining moment of your childhood.
  • Why did your character chose the archetype you selected? Or was he somehow forced into it?
  • What does he want in life? (Beyond surviving).
Accoring to this, select 2 Drives, a primary and a secondary one. By following your Drives, you can gain extra experience.

  • Family: Parents, Siblings, Couple(s), Children, Extended Family
  • Friends: What do they do?
  • Business associates: Colleagues, boss, laborers, partners, clients, suppliers, etc.
Finally, in the article of your chosen Character Archetype you will find a list of possible relationships with the other player's characters. The GM will usually leave this part for the end of the character creation process, giving each player a chance to state and co-develop with the other players their relationships.
