Synthea Settlement in Tarien | World Anvil

Synthea

One of the small "Kingdoms" in Prydith, Synthea is an unwalled town that sprawls between the Transythe River to its north and the Gulf of Prydith to its south. Between these two bodies of water lie closely packed farms, several inns, and the establishments of various craftsmen all interspersed seemingly at random. Chickens wander the worn dirt paths past blacksmiths and fishmongers who make their living casting their lines into green waters of the gulf. The combination of agriculture and "city" living gives the town an unmistakable, yet hard to categorize stench, something between manure and salted, but aging fish.

With little stone in the region, almost al of the structures are wooden. The forests of the southern Prydith Peninsula have slowly been cleared for farms and the great oaks and ash turned into rough hewn logs for homes, barns, taverns and the fences that separate everything in the town. Few buildings reach two stories and none, not even the fading white-washed manor owned by the local king extend past a third. Fire is obviously a hazard, but the local population has dug enough public wells that as long as a blaze caught quickly, the short bucket lines ensure that it does not spread.

Like the rocky shores of the gulf, the soil about the town is rocky and generally poor in quality. Farmer have found that beans and tomatoes seem to grow best and many kitchens overflow with various combinations of the two even if flour is hard to come by. Local cuisine includes a number of stews that combine the two with a variety of flavorings ranging from earthy, mushroom flavored dishes to those sweetened with honey and served as desert. Another crop that does well, particularly close to the shore, is the grape and most farms produce their own wine. Something about the salinity of the air leads to a wines with layered subtleties of flavor. Many of the best batches are barreled and sent north to Grennig or east to Drythe where Synthean Red is a popular in taverns both high and low.
