Mora Settlement in Tarien | World Anvil

Mora

Named for the smaller of Tarien's moons, perhaps because the bend of the Foaming River that sits a mere league south of the village gates. Settled a scant hundred years after the founding of Yaty, the village itself has never really grown beyond the original wooden walls - more of a picket fence really - that its founders established. The wall has, of course, been replaced at least a dozen times over the years, inevitably washing away in the river's floating that reaches the city about one spring in a hundred.

North of the city lie the farms of locals, growing wheat, barley, and a smattering of vegetables in an effort to eke out an existence. Fortunately for the farmers, the threat of invasion from the Zennonaize Confederacy has never come. It was this threat, however, that lead Yaty to establish the outpost, its sole purpose to house a garrison of soldiers that guard the bridge across the unfordable Foaming River. Charged with destroying the bridge before an invading army, the solders keep its sides slick with pitch and have pyres built alongside its piles on either shore, ready to be lit at the first sign of trouble.

Although the garrison is small, a mere hundred soldiers, their presence in the town has led to more than one tavern founding. Sadly the soldiers have little in the way of pay and there always seems to be one more tavern than they and the other 300 or so residents can support. They do keep both local smiths busy, shoeing horses and crafting heads for arrows and spears. A number of these soldiers have retired from active duty, usually at the end of a pitchfork from a local farmer, and wed a local girl, takin up the agrarian life themselves.
