Grennig Settlement in Tarien | World Anvil

Grennig

Grennig, the capital of the Principality, sprawls across an oddly shaped peninsula at the northwestern corner of the Sea of Storms. It is perhaps the busiest trade town outside of Karradone. Its population of 75,000 swells and shrinks with passing merchant trains and incoming ships. The strange shape of the city has given way to over ten miles of docks. Taverns, inns, and casinos, ranging from seedy holes beneath warehouses to glamorous, five story, five-star behemoths that float over the water itself, circle the docks, two and three streets in from shore. Brightly colored signs, some painted, some flashing, illuminated, permanent illusions, dazzle the skyline. Sailors say that when they approach Grennig from the east, they see the red and blue shaded lights of Al's & Al's of Grennig over a league from shore on a clear night. The center of town boasts the cities few artisans and plentiful markets. Goods of all sorts, from plain grains to exotic fruits, from well-crafted shoes to Elynthi Blacksteel, change hands in these open-air markets. Even merchants with permanent shops have outdoor displays beneath their awnings.

The city’s buildings, when seen behind the myriad-colored illusions and signs, stand three to four stories in height. Most building are either whitewashed, with red clay roofs, or build from red brick. The larger temples, government buildings, and more exclusive inns consist of imported marble and slate from the mountains. Most buildings have shady, interior gardens and windows designed to allow ocean breezes to flow freely through them, in an effort keep them cool. In the summer, the afternoons can get hot. In the spring and fall, they are often wet. As such, the city has adopted to a different schedule. Activity starts early in the morning, but ceases shortly before noon. During the hours when the sun is at its peak, few venture into the streets. Most enjoy a large meal, much wine, and an afternoon nap. Business resumes as the sun begins to descend, and continues until dusk. The city remains active until a few hours before dawn.
