Often, ashes are kept in an urn as a family memento or floated down the river after a short ceremony. The Husliq, Tummarand, and Tonttu citizens generally observe the Commonwealth taboo about interring whole bodies (in graves or tombs) to prevent the dead from returning as corporeal undead. Commonwealth custom says that dead bodies are supposed to be removed from the living sphere as soon as possible, so there is always a custodian on duty at the crematorium. The few Pezzlian citizens that have lived in Stagburn over the years have maintained an inhumation cemetery a half-mile to the east of town called
Borza Grevla (the
Garden of the Blessed in Pezzlian dialect).
The family who currently operates the crematorium is the Yalrow family. Brothers
Riv,
Jar, and their sister
Suniel take shifts to make sure someone is always on duty. None are particularly happy about their profession, and resent their youngest brother
Brisya who ran off to Skafatum last year. They ask anyone they learn traveling to that city to deliver a letter begging him to return.
When not on duty, the siblings look after their elderly parents
in town. Suniel also serves in the town militia with Constable Brom.
