The Fei are the plantlike people of Venus. Their striking appearance demands attention, with coloration in all shades of the rainbow. Their breath is toxic to other humanoids, so travelling Fei wear masks to avoid poisoning others.
Physiology
Fei are humanoid. The archetypical Fei is tall and slender, with intensely pink or bright white skin. However, they come in all shapes and sizes, and any colour imaginable. Fei have a lot of control over their own growth, with the ability of metamorphis allowing them to even generate new limbs or merge existing ones. For the Venusian Fei this ability is a matter of self-expression, while offplanet Fei use it to blend in on other planets. The growth process takes months, and significantly slows down as the Fei gets older.
Fei have also embraced symbiosis, though many struggle to see where the Fei end and the symbiont begins. Symbiosis was practiced in Venus back in ancient days, but seems to have fallen out of favour for most of Venusian history. Since it's reintroduction in the early spacefaring age, however, the practice has exploded in popularity.
Intoxicating Toxins
Fei aren't just toxic, but naturally intoxicating. Most creatures find the fumes of the Fei narcotic. Staying awake under the effects of the fumes givies a pleasant high. The fumes are not physically addictive, but they can be irritating and cause inflamation. I love the idea of toxic people! Is a filter enough to solve all problems in inter-species romantic relationships?
You could just risk it and hope you're one of the people who never have issues with the fumes, but to minimize risk it is best for the Fei to wear a mask as often as possible, to have lots of air filters or plants that do the same job, or for the other people in the relationship to get filter organs. How people deal with it is up to them.
The Fei you've made is very pretty! They're a lot more colourful than I was expecting (I was thinking mostly blue & green colours). Do they wear clothes like us or are those all symbiotic live plants and chorals?
Thank you! They can and do wear clothes, but I wanted to make it hard to guess what is and what isn't the Fei themselves. I like to think they enjoy that kind of ambiguity.
