Handmaidens are servants and close companions of the
Godqueen of Venus. Since the time of Godqueen
Arielle, Handmaidens have been expected to use their powers of
metamorphis to transform into identical copies of the Godqueen. This allows them to serve as decoys. The handmaidens are given a royal education in etiquette, public speaking, statecraft, and the personal mannerisms of Queen
Titania to give them the skills required for the job, as well as to aid in the metamorphis.
Threats
While it can seem like a charmed life of endless parties, albeit at the cost of your personal identity, there are dangers inherent to the role. Three handmaidens were assassinated during the Palace Poisonings early in Titania's reign. Assassination attempts today are infrequent, but not rare. Most recently a handmaiden had to retire after she was shot during an attempted craft hijacking on
Saturn.
Recruitment
The planetwide talent competition Young Venus is understood as being an audition for the position of Handmaiden. The
Monarchy of Venus seeks out the most talented young women on Mercury as potential handmaidens. With the new context behind
Titania's supposed "longevity", it is clear that the Monarchy was actively recruiting potential
keystones.
Security
Handmaidens are a crucial part of the
Godqueen's security detail. Beyond serving as decoys, they are also the primary escorts of the Godqueen. The Handmaidens take an active part in planning her route and preparing emergency exits. They need to know exactly what groups to split into, where to go and what to do during an emergency.
No gift is ever given directly to the Godqueen, it is always passed by the Handmaidens first, who are trained in detecting surveillance equipment like hidden cameras or microphones. It is said that some of the hand jewelry they wear is special made for detecting technology.
Oo didn't really think of people recruiting potential keystones. Interesting
Yeah, there's a whole lot of procedure around finding out who the new one will be on most planets. I kind of imagine it's to the degree of not-so-secret betting pools on planets like Neptune.
