The
Empress of Neptune is the sovereign of the
Trident Empire, and the
keystone of
Neptune. Known as the
Daughter of the Stars, the empress derives the right to rule from a heavenly covenant with the
sun.
Some historians believe that the heavenly covenant was intended as a check on the empress's powers, limiting the influence of the empress through the seas of Neptune. With the advent of spacefaring, however, her domain over the skies was used as religious and political justification for the conquest and colonialization of the
Kuiper Belt as well as the monopolization of the control of foreign access to Neptune. The flow of valuable off-planet technology and resources have greatly enriched the Empire.
Alongside the keystone of
Uranus and the keystones of the Kuiper Belt, the empress serves as the final line of defense against extrasolar invasion. While it has been long since the Keystones have been called to the front, all outer keystones are expected to hone their skills in preparation for the worst.
Current Holder
The current Empress of Neptune is Venilia VII. She ascended to the throne fourty years ago, and has had an uncommonly long reign as Empress. Throughout the history of the Empire, most empresses reigned for a few decades at most and then retired into a life of luxury. Though Venilia VII began her descenscion a year ago, her heir has not yet been positively identified.
Empress Venilia VII has many presumptive heirs among the accomplished daughters of the Neptunic Aristocracy. The next Empress of Neptune will ultimately be chosen by the planet itself, as the woman who rises as Keystone will be the new empress.
No-one knows for sure what skills and characteristics determine who becomes the keystone. As such the aristocracy of Neptune invest in their daughters with a fanatic fervour, giving them education and training and helping develop their accomplishments in an attempt to stack the deck in their favour. With such power at stake, many invest in the ruin of their competitors. An aspiring empress who cannot defend herself is not going to remain in the running for long.
Great little article. It's interesting that the current empress has been ruling for so long.
Thank you! Yeah, we'll learn a bit more about what's up with that when we get to her article!
