Kingdom of Remon

Remon is an island kingdom in the west of the Helerin Archipelago. The realm covers much of the island of the same name, and also includes the island city of Jaltra.

History

Prior to the arrival of the Newcomers, the island of Remon was home to the Norran of the mountains, and nomadic Fan-Shene. Much of the island was entirely uninhabited.   New peoples quickly settled along the coasts and moved inland. Remon was subsumed into the Realm of Forbin, and when the role of Lord Guardian was created in 653, Remon received its own Lord.   In 985, Asandrin III of Forbin died without an heir. In the ensuing crisis, Dayn, Lord Guardian of Remon, declared himself king of Remon as Dayn I.   Remon was a key ally to Forbin in both the defence again Yarivona and the subsequent invasion of Teros in 2264.   See also: History of Remon

Geography

The island of Remon is vast and diverse, but the Kingdom of Remon occupies only its eastern and southern lands, where fertile plains and strategic coastlines support thriving settlements. The island’s rugged spine is formed by the towering Grimcrags in the north and the Rejarn Vaults in the south, which separate the kingdom from the wild, untamed regions beyond. The Krund Hills, a rugged highland range, lie between these two mountain ranges, creating a natural divide within the island.   Remon’s settlements cluster around the fertile river valleys, particularly along the mighty River Dayn in the south and the Ogir in the north. These rivers nourish the agricultural heartlands, where most of the kingdom’s towns and cities are located. Beyond the Ogir lie the rolling Plains of Daraneen, a windswept expanse that leads to the vast and dangerous Silverwood, inhabited only by nomadic tribes who fiercely guard their independence.   To the east, the ancient and dense Denerth Woods stretches along the coast, providing resources and a natural barrier to the inland regions. In contrast, the wild and remote Cape of Larramir, with its windswept cliffs and the mysterious Forest of Thalin, marks the southern edge of the kingdom, a region sparsely populated and largely untouched by Remon’s influence.   The Straits of Jaltra separate Remon from the larger island of Great Forbin to the southeast. In the midst of this narrow, turbulent channel lies the Isle of Jaltra, a high-cliffed island that serves as a major trading hub and home to the city that share's its name.

Harsann

Harsann became the capital of Remon in the 15th century, and is home to both the Royal Palace and the Great Temple of Piatok. It sits in the wide floodplain of the River Dayn, and its great docks lie east of the city where the river meets the sea.

Jaltra

Remon's former capital city sits atop rocky cliffs on an island in the Straits of Jaltra. Jaltra is home to the Old Palace of the Monarchs of Remon.

Laknas

Laknas is the northernmost town in the kingdom, and lies near the mouth of the Ogir River. The town straddles both sides of the river, with docks along both shores. Its deepwater harbour lies a league downstream.

Soldra

Soldra is built in stepped terraces beside the cascading falls of the River Dayn as it tumbles down from the Rejarn Vaults. The town's main road twists and turns as it climbs steeply up the mountainside.

Wissan

Wissan sits in the gentle foothills of the Grimcrags, surrounded by fields and scattered woodland.

Farport

Farport is the southernmost town in Remon and sits on the eastern shores of the Cape of Larramir. On the frontier of the wild lands to the south, Farport is home to hardy, resilient folk.

Arknas

Arknas lies on the northern fringes of Denerth Woods in Remon's heartlands. The town is home to the Great Flame which burns continually in the Temple of Piatok.

Power and politics

Governance

Remon has been ruled by kings and queens since it first seceded from Forbin. The current monarch is Dastan III of House Gannin.   See also: Court of the King of Remon

Dastan III

The towns, cities, and strongholds of Remon are governed by trusted emissaries of the monarch, such as the doughty Lord Mannakar.   The king's sister, Princess Karenth governs the city of Jaltra.

Military

Remon’s military is known for its discipline and efficiency, defending the kingdom's sovereignty and strategic coastline.   See also: Military of Remon

Armed forces

King Dastan III directly commands Remon's national force to defend the kingdom from external threats.   Local lords provide forces for regional security, protecting trade routes, and reinforcing the national army during times of war.   Remon’s navy defends its coastline and maritime trade routes, particularly around the capital of Harsann and the strategic Straits of Jaltra. Remon’s naval forces are highly skilled and adept at navigating the often dangerous waters around the kingdom, protecting its coasts from pirates.

Fortifications

Remon has many castles, towers, and other strongholds. The most significant of these are listed below.   See also: Castles and towers of Remon

Castle Biltar

Situated on the southern coast along Berin Sound, Castle Biltar serves as a critical coastal stronghold. Commanded by Lord Drannis, the fortress plays a vital role in protecting the timber-rich Denerth Woods and securing the coastline. However, the mysterious disappearance of a heirloom blade, the Song of the Tide, has caused tension within its walls.

Fort Dayn

Fort Dayn is the kingdom’s first line of defence along the Straits of Jaltra. Commanded by Lord Karvas Mannakar, this sprawling fortress is a vital military hub. Recently, concerns about supply irregularities and the growing influence of Mannakar’s son, Althus, have troubled the garrison.

Irestone

A sturdy fortress on the Bay of Laknas, Irestone guards the southern Plains of Daraneen and nearby trade routes. Lord Commander Venrick oversees this outpost, where he contends with raids led by the elusive warlord Jalash Karnoch.

Laknas Keep

The great Keep at Laknas controls the vital Ogir River crossing in the north of Remon. Under Lord Garron, a cousin of King Dastan III the keep has become a hub of corruption and ambition, as Garron turns the once-honourable fortress into his personal fiefdom.

Old Palace of Jaltra

The Old Palace in Jaltra once served as the royal residence of Remon’s monarchs before the capital moved to Harsann. Now occupied by Princess Karenth, the King’s younger sister, the palace still houses a small garrison and the Royal Crypt, while its crumbling western wing falls into the sea.

Royal Palace of Harsann

The Royal Palace in Harsann is the current seat of the monarchs of Remon. Built on a rise overlooking the River Dayn and Bay of Harsann, it serves as both a symbol of power and a hub for political affairs. Its strategic location and strong defences make it one of Remon’s most secure fortifications.

Soldra Garrison

Perched above the cascading falls of the River Dayn, the Garrison at Soldra is a critical outpost controlling trade with the Norran. Commanded by the strict Captain Yuldan, tensions have risen as Yuldan’s harsh policies have damaged trade relations with the Norran cities.

Other powers

The Grand Mage of Remon is the most senior magician in the service of the King and wields considerable power at court.

Remon's priesthood, particularly that of Piatok at the Great Temple in Harsann, hold significant political power. Its High Priest, Tetton Kabbasann, is the most senior priest in Remon.

In the cities, numerous mercantile and craft guilds control trade and industry.   The Knights of Piatok, a secretive group pursuing the supremacy of Humans in Helerin, has developed amongst Remon's elite and military classes; a number of senior officers and commanders are members.

Culture

Remon’s culture is built on a foundation of rugged, muscular pragmatism. It’s a no-nonsense society where strength, both physical and moral, is revered above all else. This "muscular" ethos manifests in every aspect of life, from the hard-working, self-reliant communities in the frontier regions to the disciplined and efficient military that forms the backbone of the kingdom's power.   In Remon, there’s a clear preference for direct action and results over talk and theory. This attitude fosters a culture where stoicism, resilience, and a strong work ethic are highly valued. The people of Remon are generally straightforward, with little patience for frivolity or unnecessary complications. Honor and reputation carry significant weight, and individuals are expected to pull their weight and contribute to the community's strength.   This culture of strength isn’t limited to the battlefield or the worksite; it extends to governance as well. Leaders are expected to be decisive and unyielding, enforcing order with a firm hand. The society is structured around a clear hierarchy, where respect is earned through deeds rather than words. While this might suggest a rigid society, it’s more about clarity and purpose than oppression. Everyone knows their role, and those who excel are recognized and respected.   Remon is a land where power and class are closely tied to military prowess and land ownership. The warrior class, including military leaders and their families, forms the elite, commanding respect and authority over the general populace. Commoners, who may serve as soldiers, farmers, or traders, are generally subservient to the warrior elite. However, there is some fluidity within the military ranks, where individuals can rise through valor and skill. Despite this, the ruling class maintains a tight grip on power, and the line between the rulers and the ruled remains distinct.   Overall, Remon’s society is one of disciplined strength and practical efficiency, where the virtues of hard work, loyalty, and honor are paramount. It’s a culture that demands respect, not through fear, but through the undeniable power of its people’s collective will and effort.   The people of Remon have a strong sense of their own superiority. They respect Forbin's orderliness but find them too rigid and inflexible. The Mar Mabon Townships are seen as weak and corrupt, a stark contrast to Remon's militaristic values. The people of Teros, under occupation, are viewed with a certain condescension, and seen as justly subjugated and inferior. However, Remon respects the toughness of the Seynan Islanders, though they consider them isolated and somewhat primitive. The League of Mar Miskun is viewed with a mix of admiration and disdain, admired for their efficient trade but criticized for lacking the martial spirit Remon values.

Economics

Remon's economy is built on its natural resources. The realm has many mines, and the nation's forests are a perfect source of timber.   See also: Economy of Remon
