Lord Guardian of the Realm of Forbin

The nine Lords Guardian oversee the good order and security of their respective regions in the Realm of Forbin. They are subordinate only to the Golden King, Trybon Fane.

History of the role

The role of Lord Guardian was established in 653 when Forbin's king Rizal died, leaving his young son Jalus III as his successor. The Lords Guardian were appointed to support the king as regents in each region. The role persisted after Jalus III came of age, and continued in the centuries that followed. On the death of Asandrin III in 985, a succession crisis followed. The Lords Guardian took control of Forbin, while Dayn of Jaltra, Lord Guardian of the Remon Territories, proclaimed himself king of Remon (as Dayn I). Forbin was soon fragmented, with each region looking to its own affairs, and lip service was paid to cooperation. Teros was for many years governed as one of Forbin's regions. In 1264, its Lord Guardian, Zarroth, declared himself king of Teros. With the return of a new Golden King in 2264, the Lords Guardian once again act as the King's regional governers.

Powers and rights

Lords Guardian maintain judicial and tax-raising powers within their regions, and each has the right to muster an army. The title of Lord Guardian is hereditary, and so most have stayed within the same families for centuries. While each Lord Guardian is effectively a local ruler, it should be noted that the towns and cities of Forbin possess varying degrees of independence, with their own governing bodies directing day-to-day affairs.
