White Keep
White Keep stands as a great bastion of stone and steel in the region of Midrun, its mighty round tower and strong walls dominating the landscape.
The castle’s pale grey stones, quarried from the nearby cliffs, shimmer faintly in the sunlight, giving the keep an ethereal quality against the backdrop of the surrounding plains. Positioned along a vital crossroads, White Keep serves as both a military stronghold and a symbol of authority for the region, ensuring the safety and stability of Midrun’s scattered settlements.
The keep’s architecture is both graceful and imposing, with the main tower rising high above the outer walls. Slender windows and defensive arrow slits are interspersed along its surface, providing visibility and protection for the garrison within. The outer bailey is spacious, with barracks, stables, and training grounds.
The keep’s ruler, Pel Highstaff, the Lord Guardian of Midrun, was once known for her unwavering dedication and sharp intellect, and has ruled White Keep for over twenty years. Her reign has been marked by prosperity and growth for the region, yet recent months have seen a disturbing change in her demeanour. Whispers of madness haunt the corridors of White Keep. Lady Highstaff, it is said, has begun to suffer from erratic outbursts and vivid hallucinations.
The garrison and staff of White Keep have been thrown into disarray by Lady Highstaff’s increasingly unpredictable behaviour. Her commands have become contradictory, and the once orderly keep now teeters on the edge of chaos as her closest advisors struggle to maintain order.
Rumours swirl that Lady Highstaff’s madness may be linked to a relic she uncovered in a forgotten vault beneath the keep years ago: a small, intricately carved statue of white stone that she brought to the surface and installed in her private chambers. The statue’s origin and purpose are unknown, but since its arrival, Lady Highstaff’s health and sanity have steadily declined.
