Fort Larn

Fort Larn stands proudly atop the dramatic cliffs of the southwestern point of Daros, overlooking the turbulent waters of the Forbin Channel. As the seat of Lord Guardian Orzan Mestis, the fortress is both a strategic command post and a powerful symbol of Mestis’s authority over the region. The rugged beauty of the landscape, with its rolling grasslands and limestone outcrops, serves as a fitting backdrop for this formidable bastion of power. From its towering battlements, the fort commands a stunning view of the surrounding lands and sea, and its watchful presence has ensured the safety of Larn's people for centuries.   Fort Larn is significantly larger than the other strongholds on Daros, its sturdy grey walls enclosing an expansive central courtyard where Lord Guardian Mestis’s forces regularly drill and train. The castle’s layout is anchored by four robust corner towers, each equipped with defensive emplacements and signal beacons. A wide stone bridge connects the main keep to the outer walls, and the castle’s heavy iron gates are reinforced with bronze, making them impervious to most assaults. The fort’s position high on the cliffs makes it nearly impossible to assault from the sea, while the surrounding plains and forests offer few places for an enemy to approach undetected.   The interior of Fort Larn reflects its role as both a military command centre and a seat of regional governance. The grand hall, adorned with banners of the Lord Guardian’s lineage, serves as a gathering place for local leaders and officials. Here, Lord Mestis holds court, settling disputes and overseeing the administration of his lands. The upper levels of the keep house the Lord Guardian’s personal quarters, while lower levels are dedicated to barracks, storerooms, and a well-equipped armoury. Underground tunnels, rumoured to connect to hidden caves in the cliffs, are used as secure storage for provisions and, some say, as a means of escape or secret deployment of forces.   Recently, an unusual disturbance has troubled Fort Larn and the surrounding area. Strange tremors have been felt, originating from deep beneath the cliffs and reverberating through the bedrock. While mild at first, these tremors have grown in intensity, disrupting the daily lives of those living in the nearby villages and raising concerns among the fort’s defenders. The tremors are accompanied by a low, almost imperceptible hum that seems to emanate from the very ground itself. The people of Larn have long known that the cliffs are riddled with ancient limestone caves, but few venture into the deepest recesses for fear of the unknown. Some believe the tremors are the result of natural shifts within the earth, while others whisper of an ancient power awakening beneath the land - a power that should have remained buried. There are even tales of explorers who ventured into the deeper caves, only to emerge weeks later, haunted and broken, with no memory of what they found.
