Larn
The southwestern corner of Daros is known as Larn. It is a landscape of rolling grasslands scattered with patches of woodland and limestone outcrops. Larn’s gentle hills give way to the dramatic cliffs of the western shore, rising high above the Forbin Channel. Fort Larn, the stronghold of the region’s ruler, Lord Guardian Orzan Mestis, stands atop these cliffs, a watchful sentinel over the sea and the surrounding lands.
The grasslands of Larn are dotted with groves of Oak and Beech trees, offering both shade and timber for the local population. The limestone outcrops that rise from the plains are riddled with small caves, some of which have been used as shelters or hiding places by both wildlife and people throughout history. In the spring, the grasslands are carpeted with wildflowers, including Bloodpetal vines and the hardy Chorka shrub, whose winter berries are harvested for their bitter tang and preserved as a staple food.
While the grasslands appear tranquil, the region is not without its dangers. The cliffs along the western shore are prone to rockfalls, and the strong winds from the Forbin Channel make the coastline treacherous for ships. The limestone caves and rocky outcrops are rumored to house Krethgorr, the massive, lumbering beasts of legend, known to emerge at night to hunt or defend their hidden lairs. Though sightings are rare, the people of Fort Larn maintain a wary vigilance.
In addition to the threat of Krethgorr, the forests and grasslands of Larn are home to more familiar creatures. Wild Hrynn graze on the open plains, their woolly coats providing a valuable resource for the local communities. Foxes, with their sleek golden coats, prowl the woods and grasslands, hunting small mammals like mice and squirrels. Hawks are a common sight, soaring over the cliffs and swooping down to snatch prey from the grasslands below.
The high cliffs of Larn, which rise sharply above the sea, are not only a natural defence but a vital part of the region’s identity. Fort Larn commands a stunning view of the Forbin Channel, making it both a strategic stronghold and a symbol of power. The cliffs are also home to colonies of Alyrros, which nest in the crags and are considered sacred creatures by the people of Larn.
