Korshan Mountains
The Korshan Mountains rise from the northwest corner of Daros, a rugged range of steep cliffs and rocky gorges. Though not tall enough to be capped with snow, the Korshans still dominate the landscape with their sheer, flattened peaks and craggy terrain. These mountains are the source of the Chora and Mundal Rivers, whose waters flow through the valleys below, sustaining the forests and settlements of Daros.
The lower slopes of the Korshan Mountains are dotted with scattered woodlands, where Fir and Pine trees grow among the rocks, their deep roots gripping the mountainsides to resist erosion. In the more sheltered valleys, Oak trees find purchase, offering shade and a habitat for animals such as golden squirrels and small herds of wild Hrynn. Patches of Silvermoss cling to the shaded rock faces, their silvery hue standing out against the otherwise rugged landscape.
As one ascends, the vegetation becomes more sparse. Hardy shrubs like Arraxosa, known for its red petals that help stop bleeding, are scattered among the rocky outcrops, while Pryval shrubs provide a touch of evergreen color even in the more barren regions. The higher elevations, with their exposed cliffs, are home to Krethal Hawks and other birds of prey, which nest in the mountain crags, hunting for small mammals in the valleys below.
The Korshans are not just a wilderness, however. Their valleys hide old paths used by traders and travelers for centuries, though the steep terrain and potential for rockslides make them dangerous to navigate. For those daring enough to venture into the mountains, hidden gorges and caves offer not only shelter but the potential for discovering remnants of ancient settlements or hidden treasures long forgotten.
Despite the difficulties of life in the mountains, small communities exist on the lower slopes, sustained by sheep farming and the collection of rare mountain herbs. Fennantin, a small town at the foot of the Korshan range, is known for its sturdy stone buildings and its thriving sheep farms, which rely on the mountain grasses and the fresh waters of the Mundal River. The mountains also provide timber and stone for construction, resources that make the region valuable despite its rugged terrain.
With their steep peaks and hidden valleys, the Korshans offer both danger and beauty, a landscape shaped by centuries of erosion and the hardy life forms that have adapted to survive there.
