Callason Forest
The Callason Forest lies at the heart of Daros, stretching from the southern slopes of the Korshan Mountains to the town of Five Swords, where the Chora River reaches the sea.
Dense and ancient, the forest is a mix of towering trees and tangled undergrowth, with much of its interior remaining wild and untouched. The Chora River cuts through the forest, providing a lifeline for the flora and fauna that thrive in its shadowy depths.
At its edges, the forest is filled with Fir, Pine, and Oak trees, whose timber is harvested by the people of Jichallos and other nearby settlements. These outer regions are well-known for their lumber, with large sections of the forest dedicated to sustainable logging. However, as one ventures deeper into the Callason, the trees become older, their trunks wider and their branches reaching high into the sky, forming a dense canopy that blocks much of the sunlight. In these darker, central areas, Silvermoss clings to the bark, and Pryval shrubs grow thick beneath the trees, creating an almost impenetrable underbrush.
The forest floor is teeming with life. Dewindal mushrooms sprout in the boggier areas, while Vossalmas, the small, poisonous white mushroom, thrives in the darker corners of the forest. The damp conditions also provide the perfect environment for the spread of Redrim, the reddish-brown bracket fungus, which grows along the trunks of fallen trees. Wildlife such as golden squirrels dart among the trees, while the occasional Vorind prowls the forest's shadowy depths, hunting smaller creatures that call the woods home.
In some of the more remote areas of the Callason, ancient paths and ruined stone markers hint at long-forgotten settlements or shrines. Local legends speak of hidden glades within the forest that were once sacred to the old gods, though few dare venture deep enough to find them. The forest is not without its dangers. Dense thickets of Arralvin, a marsh-dwelling vine with sticky buds that trap small creatures, lurk near the boggy riverbanks. The Xalrith vine, with its dark purple coils, can be found strangling trees in some of the more shadowed parts of the forest, its toxic sap a well-known ingredient in dangerous poisons.
Despite its wildness, the Callason Forest is essential to the people of Daros. Not only does it provide timber and resources, but it is also a source of lore, magic, and mystery. The people of Jichallos, located at the edge of the forest along the Chora River, are particularly reliant on the wood from the Callason for their lumber industry, and the strength of their lumberjacks is known across the island.
The deeper one travels into the forest, the more untamed it becomes. The wildlife grows fiercer, the plants more dangerous, and the sense of isolation intensifies. It is said that no one truly knows all the secrets hidden within the Callason Forest, and it continues to be a place of awe, fear, and reverence for the people of Daros.
