Meelin Hills
The Meelin Hills rise in the eastern region of Daros, a series of rolling, rocky uplands that stretch from the coast to the interior. These hills are the source of the Trosha River, which flows through the town of Troshinann before joining the larger Chora River to the west. Though the Meelin Hills are not as imposing as the Korshan Mountains, they present a rugged and wild landscape, with rocky outcrops and steep slopes breaking up the otherwise gentle terrain.
The hills are dotted with patches of Pine and Beech trees, though much of the vegetation consists of hardy shrubs like Chorka, which produces white winter berries, and Pryval, whose evergreen foliage adds a touch of green to the otherwise sparse landscape. The exposed hillsides are home to fields of Bloodpetal, a tiny red-flowered vine that blankets the ground in spring, creating a striking contrast against the grey rocks. Arraxosa, a hardy shrub with red petals used to stop bleeding, grows in abundance on the sun-baked slopes, prized by healers across Daros.
While not as densely wooded as the Callason Forest, the Meelin Hills support a wide variety of wildlife. Golden squirrels and small herds of wild Hrynn graze on the grasses and shrubs, while Krethal Hawks soar overhead, hunting smaller animals in the valleys below. The wild Koroth (mountain goats), known for their large size and agility, roam the rocky outcrops and are prized by the people of Troshinann for their meat and hardy nature. However, the hills are not without their dangers—among the rocky crags, creatures such as the predatory Rhakkor lurk, ambushing prey with their sharp claws and uncanny speed. In addition, Wyrms are said to burrow deep beneath the rocky hills, occasionally surfacing to hunt. These serpentine creatures are feared for their ability to strike quickly from hiding, with their armored scales making them difficult to fend off. The occasional sighting of a Wyrm has instilled a sense of caution among the locals, who avoid the more desolate areas of the hills where these creatures are said to dwell.
The Trosha River, originating in the Meelin Hills, provides vital water to the surrounding areas, though its flow diminishes significantly during the dry summer months. By midsummer, the river often dries up completely, leaving the residents of Troshinann dependent on wells and other sources of water. The hills themselves are prone to drought during the summer, making agriculture challenging and forcing many inhabitants to rely on livestock rather than crops.
Despite its harsh conditions and the presence of dangerous creatures, the Meelin Hills hold a stark beauty. In spring, the hillsides bloom with Bloodpetal and Chorka berries, while the summer sun casts long shadows across the rocky outcrops. The region is also known for its limestone formations, which jut from the earth in strange, jagged shapes, often riddled with small caves and crevices. Some of these caves are rumored to shelter more than just local wildlife, as the hills are said to be home to the ancient, giant Krethgorr, beasts known to emerge at night to hunt prey or protect their hidden lairs.
The people of Troshinann, who live at the edge of the Meelin Hills, have a deep connection to the land. Their candlemakers are famed across Daros.
