Fort Jalus
Fort Jalus stands proudly at the southern entrance to the Bay of Jalus, a testament to the martial prowess and strategic foresight of the Realm of Forbin. Its thick stone walls and towering bastions overlook the narrow channel that leads into the bay, commanding a position of unparalleled strategic importance. The fort’s location ensures that any vessel entering or leaving the Bay of Jalus must pass under its watchful gaze, making it a critical point of control for trade and naval movements in the region.
The fort’s architecture is both imposing and functional, with massive, fortified gates and strong walls that have withstood numerous attempts at assault over the centuries. A network of interconnecting walls and towers surrounds the main keep, providing a complex and well-defended structure. The central keep itself rises above the fort’s outer walls, giving the garrison a commanding view over the surrounding sea and coastal plains. Within, the fort houses a large garrison of soldiers, as well as armouries, storage rooms, and a small port where naval vessels can dock in relative safety.
The ruler of Fort Jalus is Kirra Frenmar, the Lord Guardian of Jalussan. A fiercely intelligent and ambitious woman, Lady Frenmar maintains a tight grip over the fort and its surrounding lands. Her reputation as a skilled strategist and unwavering defender of the realm has earned her the respect of her peers and the loyalty of her men. Yet her position is fraught with tension, for Fort Jalus lies within the very region that serves as the seat of the Golden King, Trybon Fane, who rules from the capital city of Holdras.
Fane’s character is known to all: venal, narcissistic, and greedy, he views every asset within his grasp as a means to further his own wealth and glory. Lady Frenmar’s staunch refusal to bend to his whims and her uncompromising dedication to duty have placed her at odds with the Golden King. The fort’s location at the entrance to the bay is a constant reminder to Fane that Lady Frenmar controls access to his most prized asset—the trade that flows through Holdras and fills his coffers. Despite his frequent attempts to impose his will on her and demand a share of the lucrative tariffs collected at Fort Jalus, Lady Frenmar has remained defiant, resisting all efforts to weaken her authority.
