Cradle Sophont are those Sophont who evolved naturally rather than being the product of Genestruction, psychic manifestation, or programmatic fluke.

The distinction is only important to Sophontists and bigots.

Why do people care? Bragging rights, I suppose. They'd rather be a cosmic mistake rather than a calculated one.
