What a strange couple of weeks. I'm engaged to the most wonderful woman in the world. The drums are gone. Ava is back, and we are heroes.
It started pretty simply, I was nervous about losing Siona. She was leaving for bard college in a couple days and we both didn't know where it left us. We talked about making sure we kept it contact and even before I asked it was clear we loved each other dearly. I think I just had to know if she felt the same way. It feels very strange to build my future around someone else's goals and dreams. I want her to be so god damn successful it whatever she wants to do. Part of this has led to some conscious changes, first I need to start saving up my money. I have to make this mean something and I need to put my money to better use. That means no more fancy hotel or meals out. I'm guild bound for at least the next three years. That'll give her time to learn, while I can spend time saving up. That'll lead us to new adventures together, which I can't wait for. I wish there was some way to speed this whole damn process up. I know most people have to study for their abilities which feels so foreign to me, I just kind of keep picking new things up as we go. One day, I'll figure out how to travel quickly so I can see her more often, while also spending time with this team.
Speaking of that, they feel like the closest thing I have to a family. I know it has only been a few months, but man have we all been through a lot together. I never knew what it felt like to put my trust in so many people, and I'm starting to realize I'm really bad at it, because I don't know how to get my damned mouth shut around them. It seems like such a flaw, but it also feels good to be able to put so much trust into all of them.
Any-who, this is what happened.
We started with our follow up meeting with McDuffey. We all agreed to join his forces which also makes it so we can start traveling into the mountains. A lot of me wishes Siona would be joining us, she would be so good at documenting everything and if we are finding new stuff we need to make sure that information makes it back to Fiddletown.
While talking with the Baron, there was a bit of commotion. Keldrith (sp?) showed up looking like they took some explosives to the chest, which turned out to be the case. They told us about the gnoll scouting party and that pretty much settled what we were about to do. McDuffey wrote up a pretty handsome contract and we quickly accepted.
Turns out McDuffy wanted to join us, which at the time sounded dangerous for him, but then again, he can certainly handle himself. I was excited to see what he is capable of in combat. (Spoiler alert, it was pretty damn awesome).
Fermicus, Judacis, Dionychus, and members from his team joined us as well.
For the first time ever, we took mounts out into the jungle. Gotta say outside of being on a cart, I've never ridden on a mount, certainly not a dino mount. I was nervous, but I don't think anyone noticed. We made chase for the last gnoll that Keldrith wasn't able to kill, but we never caught up to it.
Eventually we made it outside the gnoll camp. Sprig found her old family and they decided to join the fight the next day with us. Never seen wolves fight gnolls, so there was a lot I was interested in seeing.
We split the group up. The guild members went out ahead while everyone else remained. This worked well with Sprig's spells, we kind of just crept up to the gnoll camp undetected.
Eventually we came up with a plan. Baron was going to lead one group from the south and we would approach from the west.
The baron did some awesome shit which killed a lot of gnolls. I don't know what the spell is called, but it grabbed and pulled everything near it into it, kind of like gravity itself bent to the baron's will. I'll have to see if I can learn that one.
The gnolls charged the southern group, which was a perfect distraction for us to go after the gnoll leader. We followed the leader into a cave. Turns out these gnolls were getting really good with the explosives. Surprisingly, some of them were willing to blow themselves up to try and stop us, it didn't work.
We made our way down further in. They had a room storing more of the explosives and well, that had to be put to a stop quickly. I launched a fireball and blew it up. Turns out there were a few gnolls in there.
Eventually we found the gnoll leader and a group of his cultists trying to summon some demon. We dispatched the gnolls, but the demon still kind of got out. He took a huge chunk out of me, and I'll be honest, if Jean didn't scoop me up and drag me away, I would have been killed. Anyway, we killed the demon, collected our old gear and a new magic rod. We also found the recipe to what they were making. At the time I felt like it was a good idea to keep it, but now after some soul searching it sounds like the worst idea possible.
We ended up getting out and collapsing the mine to make sure no one else got hurt in there.
After that we traveled back home. While traveling I asked McDuffey more about the magic, he was kind enough to explain it to me. He's a good guy and I think we've made the right decision to work with/for him.
Still fells weird to call it home. It feels weirder to know that Siona isn't there anymore. We talk every day using our sending stones and I'm glad to hear she is doing well, but damn does it burn a bit. I feel like this is the moment where people make rash decisions to get a puppy or something to fill in the void. Maybe I'll head over to Bedrock Stables and ask about a Moorbounder. At least fill my head with something else for a bit.
Like I said before, it feels odd being a known "hero" and it feels even more weird to have this group around me. I'm trying to take it all in stride and it helps that they are all really damn good at keeping my grounded. I can't wait to see where we go next.
