We began exactly were we left off last article. I'm in the belly of this purple worm trying to figure out how to get out. By complete luck I was able to teleport into a free space right along side Jean. That could have gone completely differently if someone had moved into that square. From there the worm spewed a bit of acid, slammed its tail into the summon fey creature, and swallowed Crestin. It was a heck of a fight as the water began to grow higher and flow quicker. We paralyzed the worm and the team cut it down. Crestin wiggled himself free with some help and the dark void quickly changed into the large peaceful ocean landscape we have seen during other trials. While some of the crew ventured into the newly seen landscape, we noticed a mass of gems and gold bars flowing down the pathway. We caught all of them and came away with five flawless sapphires, four rubies, and six gold bars. It wasn't an ancient item, but those gems could give us a bit of walking around money.
From there we left the trial and rested for the night. We traveled half a day to the cove, and then a day and a half back to Fiddletown. It's crazy how easy it has become to travel from the cove to Fiddletown. It's a huge advantage to be able to travel north that quickly. When we arrived in Fiddletown, Sepha Rahlok, and I quickly made our way ton the miner's guild to appraise and sell the gems and bars. They offered us 41,000 gold and after some discussion decided it was in our best interest to sell right away.
From there we gave ourselves a day to get things done in Fiddletown and oh boy did I have a long list. I started my journey by heading over to WA to test out my new spell. Normally, I just head out into the woods to practice, but this spell has appeared to be a bit destructive. I didn't want to turn a tree into ash to prove to myself I could use my spell. Turns out WA works on an appointment system and told me I had to come back in two hours. Kind of annoying, but I appreciate they have a system in place. So I pushed my line item one task into line item three, but I wasn't going to let them ruin my good day. Next, I went over to Baron McDuffey and Hilda and spoke with Hilda about purchasing some property. She showed me around the town showing me a few places of interest. One of them was a lovely town home just south of the guild hall in a private part of the city. I knew immediately it was the place for Siona and me. Had a nice room for her to practice her music in, a good room I can mess around with magic, and a large room to host the group. Cost me a nice steep 8,000 gold, but I feel it was worth it. If we continue to make money from these trials I'll be able to put some nice furniture in it.
After the house shopping and buying, I sat down with McDuffey and had a light lunch. The lunch was nice, light, and crisp, but the discussion was rather dark and intense. I bluntly asked him about what he would do with Volsaid and he was very transparent. He fears if she gained the power of the second script she would rule the mortal realm with an iron fist. If she were to learn the entire powers of the second script she would become unstoppable. She would easily dispatch of us and anyone that offered any kind of resistance.
His recommendation was simple, remove her and the threat ends entirely. Of course, on the surface it is extremely simple, but the people doing the deed would become the largest enemies of the state the kingdom has ever seen. Can you imagine from an outsiders perspective? Knight Volsaid, the accomplished knight of Baron Gilead, who has civilized the savages of Fiddletown, who discovered the valdeni, who has discovered a new civilization north of the mountains, who nearly saved the world from the elemental chaos was killed by a bunch of savages, capital outcasts, half-breeds, and failed hit-men from the explorer's guild? The world would view us as jealous, victory stealing, narcissists only looking to gain the second script for our own dark purposes. Simply put, we would be hunted. I know how knights are seen by the common folk. Until meeting Volsaid out in Fiddletown I also idealized them.
Maybe the world needs people like us to get the script. A bunch of nobody outcasts (By comparison to the nobility of a knight of course) that stumbled into this mess, just like we stumbled into finding Zirt and finding Glark. For many of us, our aspirations in life were to just survive or maybe figure out how to live a little bit of a better life. Whatever that meant at the time. Ava always used to tell me that I should aspire for more, that I was meant for greatness. I never understood it as a child. I never sought out power, or prominence. Hell if you told me someone who was actually noble and had the realms best interests was going after the second script, I would quickly retire to my townhome. Spend my days making magic items with Rufio. Somehow I doubt those people will ever exist, so the group and I will be second best. A lot to still think about. I'm not comfortable with what we will have to do, or even where we will do it.
After lunch with McDuffey I made my way over to WA again. They let me inside and led me to a portal that led to a demiplane. In there I was able to practice my spells without issue. It was rather quick, two specters appeared, and I turned them into ash. The spell was as destructive as I dreamt it, which may be perfect.
From WA, I went over to Arturo and caught up with him. I made a promise to Zirt that the next time he saw me the group would have a large amount of cocoa. Turns out Arturo is doing very well and listening to Siona's feedback. I bought 120 pounds of Cocoa and got it put into my bag of holding, all ready to go.
After Arturo, I went over for dinner with Jean. We chatted about what I learned today and did a lot of reflecting. It felt very weird to verbalize the conversation with McDuffey. It's more difficult to write it out. We are going to have to, as a group, hunt Knight Volsaid. Turns out Jean is dealing with some personal things as well. An ex, I believe is on contract for a rather dangerous mission. I believe they are trying to take out a defender of the realm similar to what we met with the Voldeni. I told Sean to turn and run and he was going to try and relay that to his commander. Hopefully they are able to make it out.
Anyway, dinner was nice. Conversation was good. We will have to see what the morning brings next.
