It felt comfortable being back with the group. The smells, sights, and conversations allow one's mind to escape.
You know people have gotten comfortable with each other when we debate the difficult philosophical issues and as luck would have it, on my first morning back the issue was where do Tortles store their shit. More importantly, do they store their shit in their shells. I can honestly say I have never thought about this topic, but Jean and Sprig wanted to get to the bottom of it.
It felt good being back.
The discussion/debate soon turned to business. Specifically, where to go next. I honestly thought we would be going further into the goblin lands. To my surprise, the group decided on the river boat contract.
Also, I learned we are housing a goblin now. I think his name is Glark? Glarph? No.. it must be Glark. Sprig likes him a lot, which means he'll be here for a while.
Ostra was looking ill. Something was going on with her, couldn't tell. Hope she doesn't die on the boat.
We went down to the river front. Met a guy by the name Captain Piceary. I have to say, he appears to be more of a caricature of a captain than what I thought an actual captain would be. Nevertheless we made way.
I think it is worth noting, I am terrible on the water. It is wet, I hate it, and it makes me uncomfortable.
The boat itself was a 60 foot long boat, with its name etched on the side. It had three decks, the captain slept on the top, with a lot of space left for storage. The boat was filled with what I would assume too many boxes, but shit. I guess I don't really know shipping vessels.
The Captain told us what had happened before, the crew made their way down the river, they got close to a large tree. They were then ambushed by frog/toad things. Those creatures used some magic to paralyze people, but Piceary killed a lot of the frog/toads.
We made a pretty good plan to ambush these creatures when we got close. Jean made a blind for people to hide under. Piceary told us it would be three days travel to the ambush spot. A lot of time to not enjoy being on the water.
For the first time in a while I opened up to Sprig. Told her about my endeavors from the week prior. It felt good to confide in a friend, but I always fear that even my friends will use any information about me, against me. Usually I will be very selective about what I say at all times, but Sprig must have been asking the right questions at the right time because I opened up. I have mixed feelings about it. Part of me feels soft for doing that, but it was also so relieving. Gross. I also showed her some new talents I have acquired. Got to speed up her and Garth. It was fun to watch, though it didn't last a long time. They were both moving really fast and getting in all kinds of trouble. Just like Ava said though, there was a hard crash at the end. Gotta make sure nothing happens to my focus if I use that during a fight.
We all went to bed. Ostra was looking worse. I got to sleep among the stars on the deck of the boat. It is strange that both sleeping in the most comfortable bed in Fiddletown and sleeping in my bedroll on this wooden deck are equally comfortable. Maybe in the later, the comfort comes from the people near me. I imagine Jean would call me soft, if I ever said that.
Woke up and Ostra was gone. Replaced by some elf named Rheda? From what it looks and sounds like, there are four beings that share a vessel. I've never seen it before, seems really odd. I have to remember that information I tell one of them may not be kept from the other three. Really makes me uncomfortable, but I also have weird shit going on and no one else in the group overtly judges me. I'll try to let them? live and let live, you know?
I can tell I am on the right track because Ava doesn't burn my fucking eyes out every waking moment. It feels good to have a much lower stress, even though I know I'm going closer to mortal danger.
Not much happened on day two. We talked some more, and got to see a lot of nature. I guess oranges are a thing on boats. I've always enjoyed them, but didn't expect to see a barrel full of them on a river boat.
Day three is where shit went down. We setup for the ambush and before we knew it. 9 Grungs were on our boat. Piceary was right, they have a nasty ability to make people stop moving. Really slowed this shit down. Rheda carved them up pretty good, sprig turned into a dire wolf, Jean blasted away, Gnarf did some stealthy rogue shit, and I got to fly around and cast spells at them. Flying in combat was pretty fun, though I got a little to close and a toad caught me in the air. Ouch did that hurt. Luckily I was able to teleport away without issue.
Long story short. We killed most of them with little loss on our side. Sprig noticed the captain was transporting some illegal drugs. Which, normally I would speak up about, but I don't want to endanger the group. We'll have to talk some time... when it is more convenient.
Now we are just walking back. Three days of boat travel... and now this long fucking walk. I need to buy a mount or some shit, my boots are not made for this.
