Commonfolk
Humans are the most widespread and adaptable people across Toriel. Known simply as the Commonfolk in many regions, they possess a remarkable capacity to thrive in nearly any environment. From bustling cities to remote mountain villages, from sunbaked coasts to forested frontiers, humans build communities, forge traditions, and shape the land around them.
Though their customs vary wildly from one region to another, Commonfolk are united by a shared sense of curiosity and determination. Wherever you go in Toriel, you’ll find humans trying to understand the world—and change it.
Northalnders
The fierce people known as Northlanders live in the north region of
Siniadòr in the
Duchy of Freed. The land of their homeland are scoured by strong winds and powerful waves, and also suffer biting, bone-chilling cold for most of the year. In deepest winter, the inlets are choked with ice, and fog lingers late into the day, if it breaks at all. Most wear furs to keep out the cold, and those going to war supplement their protection with thicker hides, and helms lined with wool or fur.
Because the Northlanders are good at fighting and sailing, and perfectly willing to attack ships close to their shores, best to be cautious around any Northlander coasts, especially if you haven't been assured of safe passage, and often even then. Still, they are great sailors, thanks to their reliable and sturdy longships and their navigation techniques. The consensus on Northlanders is that they are violent and rude folks.
Names
Family surnames are uncommon in
Tana's Empire, and people with the same name must find ways to distinguish themselves from one another. Some attach their place of birth or residence to their own names. A merchant from Holypertuis named Brigone, for example, would be Brigone of Holypertuis. Others link their name to their trade, like Ristos the Learned, or Alesta the Hunter. Noble are the rare possessing surnames.
History
Age of the Firstborn
The complete human's timeline,
History of the Humans.
Humans are believed to have originated from the interbreeding of fiends and celestials, resulting in a unique blend unseen before. Possessing a balance between freedom and order, humans are neither inherently good nor evil, allowing them to exhibit free will and independence. However, their mortality is their only weakness. These particular qualities made humans disliked by the ancient gods.
Both celestials and fiends seek to manipulate and corrupt humans, as they view them as potential recruits for their ranks upon their death.
Over time, humanity flourished and spread across the realm of Toriel. They built magnificent cities, accumulated vast knowledge, and developed diverse cultures and ethnicities.
Before the
War of the Ancients, humans already existed in the world. Largely unable to access magic, they formed societies and settled in various regions. Over time, these societies grew into larger realms and began trading as they developed the tools to cast and forge bronze.
However, their progress caught the attention of the giants, who became intrigued by the humans' activities and decided to intervene. This led to the Gorian Empire, an empire of ogres, reaching out to the humans. The giants soon realized that human technology far surpassed their own, resulting in chaos and conflict. This upheaval ultimately caused human society to collapse.
During the generations encompassing the war and the post-war period, human society underwent an exceptionally rapid transformation. With the assistance of their various allies during the war, they progressed swiftly, eventually reaching the Iron Age by the war's conclusion.
Decades, nearly a full century, of human history before the War of the Ancients was lost due to these disruptions. As humans gradually rebuilt their societies, they found themselves thrust into a new, large-scale conflict brought about by the War of the Ancients.
The War of the Ancients broke out due to an elf named
Corellon Loth in 4956 BD. This war was the opportunity for
Achille, a human hero, to rise to power, and to unite mankind against this threat. The human lacked the strength of the dragon, or the skills of the elves, but they were ingenious, and able to adapt to the ever changing war against the demonic hordes.
After the end of the war, Achille founded an empire of his own, a place were those he united could live together. And thus, was born the first human civilization, Marking in 4882 BD the beginning of the age of Civilization.
Age of the Orrin
After the nexus overflow, humans continued their societal evolution, human realms, along with Elvish, Dwarvish, and other realms, gradually advanced to a level akin to that of the Vikings. Achille newfound empire was named Orrin, a large scale human civilization.
However, a significant turning point occurred later on, known as the Nexus Overflow. This event dramatically transformed various societies as mages, once rare and powerful, suddenly became more common, and magic became a pervasive force in the world. This propelled these societies into the medieval era
The human civilization massively changed, magic impacting their everyday life, and now part of it, their empire and kingdoms expanded, as their power grew even stronger. from this era they continued to progress steadily until the onset of the great cataclysm.
The cataclysm resulted in such devastating losses that most societies regressed to a Viking or Saxon-like level of development. In the subsequent years, they embarked on the task of rebuilding their societies, and they now find themselves back in the early medieval era.
Age of Rebirth
The human, greedy for more territories, united to conquer the land to the west, starting
Tana's Great Reunion. By the time the great kingdoms of the elves and the mighty Dragonborn realized the violence that inevitably follows the humans, it was already too late. The eyes of the human leaders fell greedily on the prosperous lands of the elves and dragonborn. The Great Reunion had begun and humans were here to stay. Different tribal armies marched simultaneously west, and south; no land was safe. Unable to unite or react in time, the elven and dragonborn monarchs watched as human warriors swarmed and usurped their lands. The human race emerged victorious after years of bloodshed.
In victory, they showed mercy to the elder races. They dismantled the elven kingdoms, pushing them deeper in the forests. They left some degree of freedom to the dragonborn, mostly to avoid any civil war. forcing them to accept a certain form of dominion. The humans would have stopped at nothing, if conflict from within had not forced their armies to a halt. Having exterminated all the other kingdoms, the warlords turned against each other, each claiming the High Throne that would ater become the Imperial Throne of Tana the one who managed to unite the human and to claim the throne.
Having shorter lives to live than the other races, their old hatreds have faded, and they are now more receptive to other races. But elves live long, and even if most are fine with the current reign, some rare still hold a grudge.
