Recommended Classes in Gears of Chronan | World Anvil

Recommended Classes

This article summarizes how each player character class fits the steampunk-themed setting and the dichotomy of chaos vs. order. It is assumed that lawful characters originate from the Eight States of Chronan and follow the teachings of the Order, while chaotic characters live in the outskirts of society. This article also lists subclass recommendations that fit especially well with the setting.   ARTIFICER: fits the theme perfectly with all of its specializations, especially with a lawful alignment. The Artificers' Guild has a guildhouse in each of the capitals of the Eight States.
  • Fleshstitcher (homebrew): artificers with this subclass might have a background at the Prometech Institute or the crime gang known as Riff-Rats in Czenova.
  •   BARBARIAN: fits a player who wants to portray a true outsider of the society with chaotic alignment, with few exceptions.
  • Path of the Storm Herald: this could portray an adventurer from the Hourglass Desert of Gardenoor, the depths of the United Merdomes or the frozen Skyward Peaks.
  • Path of the Street Brawler (homebrew): become an urban survivalist that uses dirty fighting techniques learned in the streets.
  • Path of the Zealot: perfect for a devout follower of The Order, such as an inquisitor.
  • Path of Wild Magic: this subclass might depict a vagrant influenced by the chaotic energies of the wilderness.
  •   BARD: this class would fit both a lawful and a chaotic character, but especially a worshipper of Manadis.
  • College of Creation: suitable alternative option to Artificer for someone who wants to be more of an artist than artisan.
  • College of Dance (homebrew): the Bardic College of the Graces in Geigerport teaches this subclass.
  • College of Eloquence: good fit for someone deeply invested in the high society of the cities.
  • College of Glamour: someone from the Grandwood would portray this subclass well.
  •   CLERIC: all Domains are covered by the eight Gods of Time and Order of Time and Space, so any would fit a lawful character. Institutionalized worship of other gods within Chronan is forbidden, so it is only recommended for those of chaotic alignment.
  • Community Domain: fits well to the theme of an altruistic neighborhood healer or priest originating from a poorer district or settlement.
  • Forge Domain: thematic to religious engineers and machinists, such as the worshippers of Kreusstross.
  • Order Domain: great fit for a cleric truly invested in worshipping the lawful gods.
  • Volcano Domain (homebrew): suits a chaotic cleric worshipping volcanic deities such as Azhaer and Ixhor of the Brimstone Island , or the Phoenix Goddess of Mount Doraman in Geigerport.
  •   DRUID: suitable for a player who wants to portray someone of chaotic alignment. The character might be shunned and even persecuted within the Eight States, where primal magic and worship of the spirits of nature are forbidden.
  • Circle of Spores: great for a druid who has lived in Netherspan or at the Fungal Forest in Parcivale.
  • Circle of Stars: a druid affected by the chaotic influence of The Fellstar could belong to this circle.
  • Circle of the City (homebrew): suitable for a lawful druid attuned to urban life.
  • Circle of Wildfire: fits a denizen of Heathaven.
  •   FIGHTER: versatile choice for any alignment, fits the world well especially with proficiency to firearms.
  • Cavalier: some warriors still cling to the old ways of mounted combat, such as the Green Knights of Jubileum or the orcish tribes living south of Geigerport.
  • Pugilist (homebrew): these boxers prefer to use only their two fists and superior maneuvers to dominate battles.
  • Rune Knight: great fit for a warrior from Aerdale, located in a valley among the Skyward Peaks, since the aerdalian dwarves inherited the gift of runes from the Giants.
  • Scofflaw: these brutish street fighters are perfect for the chaotic alignment.
  •   GAMBLER (homebrew): these daring risk-takers can originate from any city and alignment, as long as they believe that luck is on their side.
  • Card Shark: this option adds limited spellcasting to the class, along with elemental attacks.
  • Fortune Teller: an option for a more physical diviner, this utility-leaning gambler might originate from any carnival such as the Isle of Carnavalon in Jubileum.
  • High Roller: the simplest gambler to play, this damage-dealing subclass aims for more critical hits.
  •   MONK: can be reflavoured as a member of a secluded religious sect. It could also be used for a character from the outskirts of Chronan.
  • Way of the Ascendant Dragon: suits a monk from the Glimmering Archiourano, realm of the Dragon Lords.
  • Way of the Iron Fist (homebrew): depicts a lawful monk worshipping Aegias-Meteo and wielding clockwork gauntlets.
  • Way of the Four Elements: orcish tribes living south of Geigerport worship the four elements, so a monk hailing from among them could follow this tradition.
  •   PALADIN: the class could be used for a devout protector of the official faith. Following gods other than the eight Gods of Time and Order would be forbidden in Chronan, so they could not be of a lawful alignment.
  • Oath of Order (homebrew): the oath sworn by Steam Knights, designed to be highly thematic.
  • Oath of the Ancients: the Green Knights of the Verdant Chapel in Jubileum fit this subclass well, pining for the glory days of the old elven kingdom.
  •   RANGER: would lean towards chaotic alignment due to their closeness to nature, but a lawful character could work around this with proficiency to firearms.
  • Drakewarden: a person hailing from The Glimmering Archiourano would fit this naturally, being a servant of The Dragon Lords. A more chaotic choice would be a member of The Rubine Reavers.
  • Fey Wanderer: could be someone living in the Grandwood or even hail from the Faerie Realm.
  • Gloom Stalker: might portray a denizen of Netherspan, this world's version of the Underdark.
  • Magunner (homebrew): these rangers have learned to combine modern firearms with their natural magic.
  •   ROGUE: playing a lawful character with this class would require some thought.
  • Inquisitive: great fit for a low-ranking member of the Inquisitors, or a private investigator working in the seedy parts of society.
  • Mastermind: could portray someone making their fortune among the upper class citizens.
  • Poisoner (homebrew): suitable for a rogue working for criminal gangs such as the Rabblesnakes in the Komplecza Undercity of Czenova.
  • Scout: suitable for someone well-traversed in the wilderness outside the cities, and works well with firearms.
  • Swashbuckler: with some reflavoring, this rogue could be a dashing Sky Pirate.
  •   SORCERER: the chosen alignment of the character steers towards certain subclasses.
  • Blood Magic (homebrew): these sorcerers are born with their blood infused with magic, but the way they use it causes fear and discrimination, so this subclass befits a chaotic character.
  • Clockwork Soul: works well for a lawful magic-user from the cities of the Eight States.
  • Divine Soul: could fit well for someone who is imbued by the magic of the eight Gods of Time and Order, but does not belong to the clergy.
  • Draconic Bloodline: a character with this subclass could have lineage descending from The Dragon Lords or the Greatwyrms, or even be one of The Rubine Reavers.
  • Wild Magic: fits a chaotic sorcerer who is affected by the chaos energy running amok in Chronan.
  •   WARLOCK: fits a player who wishes to be chaotic and actively work against the laws of the Eight States (with one exception).
  • The Celestial Patron: the only straightforward choice for a lawful warlock.
  • The Fathomless Patron: perfect for a character hailing from The United Merdomes.
  • The Genie Patron: great fit for someone born in Heathaven, especially with an efreeti patron.
  • The Great Old One Patron: a warlock who has been affected by the chaotic forces of the Fellstar might have this patron.
  • The Grimoire Patron (homebrew): depicts someone who has made a pact with a spirit inhabiting a spellbook from the lost magocracies. This subclass combines wizard's spell versatility with warlock's mechanics.
  • The Undead Patron: fits a character with connection to the Necropolis of Uzzud in Parcivale.
  •   WIZARD: each God of Time and Order is affiliated with one school of magic, so a lawful character can worship one and still study arcane magic.
  • Order of Scribes: suits well for a player who wants to play an officiated scholar from the cities of the Eight States or perhaps a crafty journalist.
  • School of Chronomancy (homebrew): wizards trained at the Chronologicum in Czenova City, designed to be highly thematic.
