Gathetoken City Wall
The Gathetoken City Wall is a linear fortification. The wall starts in Lourdene District at the Low Tower and proceeds via West Postern (Itlare), River Gate (Justices), Krolle’s Tower (also Justices), the North Postern (Krolle), to the elaborate Coral Gate (Coral Gate District). The walls then continue with no further opening to the Giant’s Chimney (Strangers) before turning south to the Forest Gate (East Market District) and the Citadel. The Sea Gate allows access along the bank between the Citadel walls and the River Gathe.
No buildings are permitted within 100m of the outside of the walls.
Purpose / Function
Defence of the City of Gathetoken from land-based attacks.
Architecture
The walls were built as a piece (except for Krolle's Tower and the Giant's Chimney) and have a similar structure throughout. There is an outer Rock face to the wall, a core of Earth and an inner face again dressed in Rock. The wall itself is some 15m thick at the top and 15m high.
The Rock for the facings is local Limestone, with a band of red Sandstone imported from a quarry far up-river.
The story that the walls were erected in a night by a pair of elementals is clearly untrue as the Corporation of Gathetoken's accounts show they they paid labourers, Masons, etc. for 4 years.
