Bridge Gate Steps
The Bridge Gate Steps are a public landing place adjacent to the Bridge Gate on the up-stream side of the Gathe Bridge. It is really only usable for "an Hour either side of the High-Tide" as at other times the current past the steps is faster that makes landing convenient. At low-tide, landing can be positively dangerous.
Purpose / Function
A public stair leading from the bank to the river water of the River Gathe.
Architecture
The stair is a set of Limestone steps that lead from the bank-level to several metres below the lowest tide so that as the water level changes, there is always an achievable way out of the river. It is a way for swimmers to exit the water, a place where ferries discharge passengers (when the tide is high) and where the general public may land or embark without special landing fee.
