Travellers' Rest

Why this isn't called the 'Bridge Tavern' is a discussion that is oft held by the patrons of the establishment, but the owner calls it the 'Travellers' Rest' and so that is its name. "The 'Travellers' Rest', you know, the tavern by the Bridge Gate."

Purpose / Function

The Travellers' Rest is there to provide somewhere for those who have come to Gathetoken to settle down for an hour or so and rest. And they get good food, good beer, and don't get bothered by the noise and bustle of the scrum by the gate while they are doing it!
— Arthur of Harwood

Architecture

The Travellers' Rest is a stone building that sits on the edge of the causeway leading to the Gathe Bridge. Its lowest floor opens out into the brew-yard at just above river level and holds the River Bar and the barrel store - the kitchen is accessed from the brew-yard. The Bridge Level holds the common-room and a number of private dining rooms, while the next floor consists of the guest rooms. The top floor has the Taverner's Rooms and those of the live-in tapsters.

The building is of sturdy construction of Limestone to the Bridge Level and Timber-Framed with plastered-walls above that. The whole front is painted with a picture of a traveller resting on his staff and holding a tankard!
