Gathetoken
Living in Gathetoken is what happens while you keep moving. Stand still and the place will roll over you like you aren't there.
Government
Main Article: Corporation of Gathetoken
The Corporation of Gathetoken is governed by the Council of Wardens. This council is a very lively chamber that tries to balance the needs of the Temples, Residents and Businesses with the desires of the High King.
Defences
Aethereal Defences
The primary defence of the city is the presence of two great temples: Water and Trade. Additionally, there are 15 temples and over two dozen public shrines.
Physical Defences
Fleet
The main physical defence of the city is the galley fleet – This requires, when fully manned, 3200 crew. The city itself is able to supply about 800 of these – the remainder being drawn from the surrounding ward.
Walls
Gathetoken is walled – protecting the north end of the eastern-most crossing of the River Gathe. The wall starts in Lourdene District at the Low Tower and proceeds via West Postern (Itlare), River Gate (Justices), Krolle’s Tower (also Justices), the North Postern (Krolle), to the elaborate Coral Gate (Coral Gate District). The walls then continue with no further opening to the Giant’s Chimney (Strangers) before turning south to the Forest Gate (East Market District) and the Citadel. The Sea Gate allows access along the bank between the Citadel walls and the River Gathe.
No buildings are permitted within 100m of the outside of the walls.
From the Seagate to the Low Tower the river itself forms the boundary of the city’s land. The Bridge Gate sits at the north end of the Gathe Bridge itself.
Watchhouses
The watchhouses each have a roster of six city watchmen. The gates also have four Porters each and the Bridge Gate has an additional two Jailers. The Giant’s Chimney and Krolle’s Tower each have four wall-guards. The Citadel has the Warder’s Guards. The city also has a small volunteer cavalry force (wealthy residents) and a levy that can be called out in emergencies.
Citadel
The Citadel is the final layer of defence for the city. It is the city's strongest defence.
Infrastructure
Buildings
All buildings must be made of stone or brick, or must be plastered to prevent the spread of fire. Similarly, all roofs must be tiled, flagged or slated. Un-plastered thatch and shingles are banned, by city ordnance.
Water Supply
The town has an aqueduct that feeds a public fountain at the corner of the Mint, Bridge, Temple and East Market Districts. This supply also feeds some of the wealthier residences in the east of the city. Itlare, Dene, Lourdene and Granary Wharf Districts generally draw their water from the Rivers Gathe or Lourdene. Other districts are supplied by wells and a thriving water-carrier trade.
Sewerage
The sacred nature of the river means that Gathetoken has strict rules regarding what may be discharged into the watercourses. By agreement, sewer has been constructed that carries much waste away – it is partially flushed by the tide at the neaps and completely flooded at floods – and discharges at Grime’s Marsh: well away from the temple waters. Buildings not connected to the sewer must have night-soil removed by other means.
