The Profession of Mason is one of those closely associated with Rhad-Usi and the Rock Rune.

This profession is related to the profession of Stonecutter.

Career

Qualifications

To be a Mason, the applicant must be, at least, an Initiate of Rhad-Usi.

Career Progression

Many Masons will have started as Stonecutters under other Masons and advancement in the Guild of Masons is dependent upon acceptance by that guild's members.

Perception

Purpose

Masons are those workers in Stone that are also charged with the design and planning of the construction of stone buildings.

Social Status

Masonry is generally associated with Defensive Structures, Expensive Houses and Major Buildings such as Bridges, Temples and Shrines. As such, this brings the Mason into contact with the higher social classes, which enhances their status.

Demographics

In Novaborea, Masons are found in Gathetoken, other major cities in the Kingdom of Bytyr and practically nowhere else in the Civilised areas.

History

Masonry was developed in lands with no cheaper building material and perfected by the Old Empire. It's use in the Kingdom of Bytyr is a military and status issue. Buildings constructed of Stone are relatively impregnible to the forces and technologies available to the Native Tribes and provide a level of Kudos that even the most grand wooden structure can be hard-pressed to emulate.

The most iconic tools of the trade are the Hammer and Chisel used to shape Stone, and the Set-Square and Compass used to mark out shapes.

Other necessary tools include Lifting Shears used to pick-up pieces of Stone, Wedges used to split it, and a Broom to clear up the pieces!
