Maerl's Obelisk

Maerl's Obelisk is the most enigmatic feature in Gathetoken. It predates the City - it even predates the arrival of the Bytyrii.

It is nearly 20m tall and sits on the edge of an old island some 15m above the river-level. It consists of a single stone that can only have been worked through thousands of hours of manual labour or the use of significant magics, yet nothing of its purpose or history has been discovered by the many who have tried. How it arrived in it's current position, who moved it and who erected it is also obscure. Questions to the River Gathe have revealed nothing - despite the river having flooded that high fairly recently in its long history.

The stone is quite weathered - any carvings that may have been on the stone's surface are now obscured or worn away.

Purpose / Function

The purpose of this rock column is unknown. Maerl's Obelisk absorbs magic and swallows spells. It is practically impossible to cast a spell while touching the stone and this effect sometimes extends a small distance from its surface.

Claims were made some years ago that a Dragon was seen perched on the stone, it's tail wrapped about it for balance. Unfortunately, the witness to this supposed event was discovered to have been almost insensible in drink - and the Watch on duty saw no such creature when they arrested him for disorder.
