Great Temple of Gathe
The Great Temple of Gathe is one of the pre-eminent temples on Novaborea. With a Valley that stretches from the North-Channel to the Dragonmounts and a drainage basin that covers over a million square kilometres, the temple represents one of the key powers of Novaborea.
Purpose / Function
Great Temple of Gathe. Centre of devotion and place of pilgrimage.
Architecture
The Centre of the Great Temple of Gathe is the Temple Pool. About this are 4 small islands that contain the spring - and protect it from the flow of the main river. These islands allow land-based species access to the pool and provide water-based species with the flows and currents and pockets of still water that make this place special.
Less that one tenth of the main areas of the Temple are above the waterline. This is a construction that assumes that the worshippers have the ability to swim, and to remain under-water for some time. Thus the architecture includes many parts that are inacessible to land-dwellers - including the main altar within temple itself.
History
The Great Temple of Gathe pre-dates the foundation of Gathetoken and stretches back to antiquity. This has always been venerated by the inhabitants of the valley of the River Gathe because of the spring, and the agreement that marks this as the boundary (spring-tide mark) between Gathe and the Sea-Gods has made this site doubly important.
The original Gathe Bridge construction was made to reach this temple complex from land, not to cross the entire river. Thus the north end of the Bridge is much older than the rest.
