Sol Central District

The Sol Central District is the heartland of Sol space. At its centre lies the Sol System and its closest neighbours, Alpha, Beta, and Proxima Centauri, Barnard's Star, the Luhman Twins, and Wolf 359. It is the birthplace of the Human species, and its most heavily developed.

Sol

The Sun, known simply as just The Sun for most of human history, is the birthplace of Humanity. It is impossible to overstate the importance of the Sol System. It is heavily colonised, and home to over one trillion people. The planets of Earth, Luna, Venus, and Mars are the most widely developed and advanced societies in the entire united Sol.

Earth

Earth is the homeworld of Humanity. After being very nearly destroyed by Climate Change, most of its population finally, and violently, came together to enact much needed social, political, and ecological change. The result is a modern Earth home to countless megacities, built alongside and within nature, abandoning many former cities to be reclaimed. It is well on its way to becoming an Ecumenopolis, one designed to consider its footprint on the planet, and negating the effects of such a massive population shift. Earth, in its quest for sustainability, has forced most of its 'dirty work' off-world, spread across the Sol System, and beyond.   It is the capital of the United Nations of Sol-Aligned Systems, with its capital located here, in Halundi, a purpose-built capital city, settled in the fertile Saharan Grasslands. Most of Earth's historic cultures and traditions fled into space during the many great migrations, where they have been kept alive by their descendants. On Earth, much has been sacrificed to achieve unification, resulting in a largely unified Earther identity, one that values bravery, adventure, and optimism. Earthers tend to be environmentally conscious, and united in their dedication to the pursuit of an interstellar human civilization. This does not mean that historic cultures are not present, there are still differences between a human born in German lands, and a human born in West African lands, but they are bound by a collective Earther nationality, and a shared relationship with the land. Earthers are perhaps some of the few humans remaining with a shared historic trauma, the memory of the many wars, disasters, and struggles related to climate change, and have a relationship with their planet that no other human world does.

Mars

Mars is a bustling, developed world, the fourth planet from Sol. After years of continuous effort, Mars is finally habitable, mostly. The air is thin, but breathable, and plants have begun to sprout across the reddened surface. Perhaps the most noticeable thing about the modern Mars is that it is raining. All the time. The Great Martian Deluge is part of the terraforming effort to seed Mars, covering the land with water and forging rivers, lakes, and most importantly, the Oceanus Borealis, Mars' northern ocean. Much of Martian life takes place under vast biodomes, or deep in various caves and 'Martian Mountainhomes'.   Unlike Earth, which has unified under a collective identity, Mars has remained happily divided since its initial colonisation. There at over three hundred recognised independent Martian nations, all of them with their own unique systems of government. There are quite a few Martian monarchs that bend their knee to Sol in exchange for legal recognition. So long as the resources keep coming, and the Martian people are treated fairly, then they're more than happy to let them squabble and disagree over petty things.

Venus

Venus is home to countless Humans, most of whom reside in Venus' upper atmosphere. It produces a large amount of food for the Sol System, with massive floating farms constructed atop every habitat. The average impression of Venus that most people have is that it is full of Farmers and Landowners. Rich and Poor. A mixed bag really.

Luna

The Moon, officially known as Luna, is largely a retreat for Earth's rich, home to country clubs and estates all across the pockmarked land. The towns and cities spread across Luna come in two forms; gambling cities and resort towns, geared exclusively towards the rich Earther tourists; or industrial cities and farming communities, huddled under their biodomes and a relic of the earliest days of colonisation. Life is pretty comfortable, even for the non-rich of Luna. Its location in the heart of Sol affords it significant influence. Besides, there's always some rich, naive tourist just waiting to be convinced to part with their wallet, willingly or otherwise.

Barnard's Star

Barnard's Star is a red dwarf star system located around 6 light-years from Sol. It is home to one inhabited exoplanet, Emerson. The planet's extreme gravity has made it hard for any non-adapted people to remain on the surface for extended periods of time, and so it has become a sort of homeworld for grav-adapted humans. Barnard's Star is home to a large consortium of Interstellar Merchant Confederation stations and offices, and is widely considered to be their de facto headquarters.

Wolf 359

Wolf 359 is a red dwarf star roughly 7.9ly from Sol. It has one occupied planet, Kassandra, a hycean world with a global ocean. Colonies are largely found at the planet's north and south poles, where large ice sheets create the only solid landmass on the planet. Like Alpha Centauri and Barnard's Star, it was an early target for colonisation. Kassandra is largely a saltwater ocean, and has been seeded with a vast number of Earthly aquatic species.

Centauri

Centauri refers to the trinary star system of Rigil Kentaurus, Toliman, and Proxima Centauri. Among countless orbital habitats, mining, and research station, the system is home to a number of colonised exoplanets; Tiamat and Abzu lie in orbit around Alpha Centauri, being an ocean world and a desert world respectively; Valentina, a tidally-locked superearth in orbit around Proxima; and Qazvini, a hot, lava-covered world lying close to Toliman.   The α Cen system Sol's closest neighbour, and has extremely close ties to Mars, dating back to the days of the Ares Confederation. It's loyalty to Mars during those tumultuous decades has earned it a high position of influence within the Sol Senate. As of the modern day, it is a manufacturing hub for Sol.

Luhman Twins

The Luhman Twins are a pair of objects discovered in the early 21st Century, located close to Sol, and subsequently visited during the eventual outward migration into the galaxy.

Luhman 16

Luhman 16 is a binary brown dwarf system located around 6.5 light-years from Sol. It has no exoplanets, and is not connected to any bluespace gateway system. Despite its proximity to Sol, it has a very low population compared to nearby systems. The only thing saving this system from being an ignored backwater is the Luhmans 16 Star Lift Project. The brainchild of a rich, eccentric Martian businessman, the project is designed to produce vast amounts of energy by tapping into the failed star's deuterium fusion. While the project has so far failed to produce any meaningful results, it has been an incredible boon to scientists across human space as an insight into the inner workings of these mysterious objects.

Luhman 17

Luhman 17 is a large rogue planet located 7 light years from Sol. Originally thought to be an extremely small and cold brown dwarf, upon arrival by scientific researchers in the early 22nd Century, it was discovered to be a planet five times the size of Jupiter that had not achieved fusion of any kind, its planetary dust cloud snatched away by some unknown cataclysm, leaving this failed star to float alone in the void. It has since been turned largely into a tourist trap, where people can visit the 'starless planet'.
