Louis Poincaré

Louis Poincaré

Louis Poincaré was a French philosopher, author, guerrilla leader, military theorist, and revolutionary socialist. He was a commander of The Brotherhood who led much of the revolution against the People's Republic of Lordania. Poincaré served as Second-In-Command behind Jacques Garcin, responsible for much of the philosophical anti-unitarian push. It is reported that Poincaré wrote a minimum of fourty-two books between 2262-2280 against the Unitarian's political and philosophical beliefs.   Poincaré was born on Nouveaulyon in 2216 and attained a master's in philosophy and law. His classmate was friend and future senator Jacques Garcin. The two would remain close friends for life. In 2248, Poincaré took up a position as professor of philosophy on Cinu, where he witnessed much civil unrest and discontent.   In 2265, following the formation of the People's Republic, Poincaré was marked for execution by the state, and he fled underground alongside Aliyya Karimi and various Cinuan Governments-in-Exile. While in hiding on Cinu in these early years, he began to formulate much of the ideas that would influence The Brotherhood.   Fleeing Cinu in 2267, Poincaré would take command of the BCV Respite, a newly christened ship stolen from the People's Republic. A capable battleship, it served as the base of operations for the newly formed Brotherhood. It was from this ship that he did much of his writing and work against the Unitarian Party.   After the destruction of the PRL, Poincaré took direct control of the Respite, and vanished without a trace in 2286. Trails indicate that the Respite took off in the direction of the constellation Virgo. Poincaré and crew are still marked as MIA in official records, and rumours persist that the Respite was searching for something, and found it.   Poincaré remains a controversial figure in human history, with his followers termed Poincarists. As military commander, he led the Brotherhood to military victory and was responsible for blockading the Unitarian Fleet, and was the only Brotherhood commander to agree to the assassination of Leonard Percy, which took place in 2279. In the last years before his disappearance, he wrote strongly about the unification with Sol, predicting the Gaia Conflict and arguing a unified Lordania was the only way a victory could be achieved. His views proved to be accurate, with the CSL remaining neutral in the war and Sol negotiating a bitter peace. In the years since the war, his following has only increased.

Physical Description

Physical quirks

Despite no specialised military training, Poincaré advocated and practiced a belief he called "Action Directe", in which he trained extensively as a guerilla fighter and partisan, and encouraged all members of the resistance, both active and reserve, to prepare for a life of total dedicated to the cause of defeating fascism.

Poincaré placed considerable effort into his personal appearance. Whenever in public, he wore a navy blue greatcoat, believed to have belonged to his father. His wardrobe was kept and maintained, and the man was never seen in public without some form of Brotherhood insignia, which he often displayed proudly.

Personal history

Louis Poincaré was born on the 21st of April, 2216 in Vienné, a small town on the outskirts of Geneva, on Nouveaulyon. He is the third son of Veronique and Marcel Poincaré. His parents were veterans of the Dictature Du Foule, who had lived through a period of serious unrest and upheaval. His father had served as part of the Socialist Army, taking part in the liberation of Geneva and the founding of the East Cateaux Socialist Republic. As such, the family was comfortably middle-class, living off the land on their vineyard. Things would change in 2233, with the Independence Riots taking place across much of the Lordanian Cluster. This coincided with his first year at the Tronchine Academy of Political Science, where he studied philosophy and law. It was here that he first met his friend and future ally, Jacques Garcin, as the two shared a bond over their support for the protestors. One such protestor being his mother, Veronique, who in 2235 was arrested for her part in the riots, and sentenced to Transportation, sent to the newly established Pinascimate Penal Authority. This was a critical event in influencing the young Poincaré's life, who would grow to harbour a violent feeling of resentment towards authoritarian action.   In response to his mother's exile, his family relocated to Tersten and settled in Nevada alongside countless other protestors, activists, and humanitarians who protested the Penal System. Louis however, chose to remain on Nouveaulyon to continue his studies, sleeping at the houses of his close friends until he was able to rent a place of his own, where cohabited with Jacques Garcin and Marian Tessier. By 2239, Poincaré had completed his studies, and was a published author, having written one book, “Sur l'injustice” (Poincaré, L. Garcin, J., 2237 On Injustice), a discussion on the nature of societal injustice, largely related to his experiences during the Independence Riots.   Throughout the 40s, Poincaré had opted for the life of a drifter, first moving to Pinascimate to reconvene with his family, and mourn the passing of his Father. He spent a few years travelling the planet, which still struggled through its oppressive penal system, where he is alleged to have met, briefly, Jonathan Tersten himself. On his journey across Pinascimate, he grew to have a great appreciation for its people and their struggles for freedom, briefly joining with an armed insurrectionist group of Wisani, in the Lawless Frontiers. By 2247, with the passing of the Dynamic Economy Act, Poincaré endeavoured to return back to Nouveaulyon, reconvening with his old friend Garcin, who by now was a rising figure in the Lordanian Senate. Poincaré returned to his career as an author, penning several more books before being offered the role of Head of Philosophical Studies at the University of Kassala, on Cinu.   As a lecturer in Kassala, Poincaré learned the local Kasçesi language, where he became close friends with several of his students, including the young Amir Al-Malham and Baladi Asghar. Following the Cinuan Economic Collapse, Poincaré was thrust briefly into the spotlight, predicting the Cinu Unification Wars, and urging his students to take great care. Many of them were conscripted into the Kassallan Army, and only the lucky returned.   All the while, all across Lordania, the Unitarian Party was gaining traction. It promised many things, to many people, and called for radical, and dangerous actions. Blatently fascist, the Unitarians represented the biggest threat of all, and Poincaré was very quick and very clear to denounce it. He repeatedly criticised the policies presented by Leonard Percy, and offered his own thoughts on how the situation should be addressed. However, he had neither Percy's charisma, muscle, or funds, and was just one of many voices shouting against a hurricane. Despite his repeated attempts to prevent it, the people of Cinu overwhelmingly voted for the Unitarian Party in the Election of '60, setting the stage for the rise of the Unitarian State.   For the next five years, Poincaré spent his time working with his closest students to prepare for the eventual rise of the People's Republic. It is said that he held passionate lectures, speaking for hours about the upcoming struggles and how to overcome them. The 'Secret Lectures of Louis Poincaré' were documented and widely spread online following his rise as a household name during the Revolution.
Of the thirty of us privileged to hear him speak, not one of us did not go on to become a proud part of the Resistance. He brought together the Majlis Alhuriya."
Maimun Nasir
When the People's Republic of Lordania was formed in 2265, Poincaré was targeted for the Purge of '66, but was able to escape thanks to forewarning of Jacques Garcin and U'Ovai Villalobos, who in an ironic twist of fate, would become head of the Unitarian Communication Division, its primary spy network. Alongside him were: Maimun Nasir, the former President of Kassala, who had been ousted following the end of the Cinuan Unification Wars by Çetin Üllasuli; Aliyya Karimi, former Captain of the Kassalan Army; and Amir Al-Malham, one of his former students and a conscripted soldier in the Kassalan Army.   In 2267, Poincaré by Captain Mei Zhuang of the Unitarian Navy to report Garcin's disappearance, and her subsequent desire to defect. In response, the two left Cinu, bound for Indus, the location of the Indus Shipyards. Together, Poincaré and Zhuang were able to sneak inside the shipyards and capture the CV Respite, an unfinished prototype stealth carrier, and escape undetected into deep space. News of this soon spread around the Cluster, reaching the in-hiding Jacques Garcin and his band of allies; Cho Hyun-joo, Wil Griffith, and Arthur Parker, who were able to make contact with Poincaré and regroup aboard the Respite. The Brotherhood was born.   From the Respite, Poincaré would grow to become the Commander of the Revolution, assisting in the organisation of military and paramilitary forces, penning their official anti-unitarian doctrine, and leading the Resistance alongside his allies. While under normal circumstances, an ardent Nouvealyonian Socialist and an Upper Lordanian Conservative would probably hate each other, together Poincaré and Zhuang were vital allies who worked together despite their political differences to achieve a simple goal of destroying the Unitarian Regime and the People's Republic of Lordania.

Morality & Philosophy

Poincaré was a prominent political philosopher whose beliefs, along with ally and co-founder of the Brotherhood, Jacques Garcin, came to influence the founding of the Confederate Systems of Lordania. His critical theories about interstellar politics, societies, and culture - collectively understood as a Poincarism - hold that unjust authority can, and will, continue to plague mankind, and that it is the duty of the state and the people to be "Paladin d'Égalité", the Paladin of Equality. The Paladin of Equality is a political concept in which the people, and thus the state, are eternally vigilant for tyranny, that political indifference and indignation is as great an evil as intentional tyranny, and that no political safeguard is enough. The Paladin of Equality will always be the best first and last line of defence.   Unlike other members of the Democratic League, who saw the idea of a Sol-led Second Lordanian Republic as an affront to those who fought for a unified democratic cluster, Poincaré believed that human unification would prove to be the most important challenge of the 25th Century. Prior to his disappearance, he spoke out against his fellow allies, stating that without the help of the Brotherhood and the Democratic League, Sol would be unable to win a war against its stronger neighbors.   In the years following his disappearance, many new theorists have expanded on Poincarism, attracting a strong cult following to his views. His views have found following in both sides of the cluster, as well as the greater human space. Though many who preach his views in Sol often twist or downplay his harsh criticisms of corporate capitalism that he saw as "the second worst political philosophy, behind liberalism."   Poincarism is seen as the counter to Garcinism, which sees the best defence against tyranny to be a decentralised state with power given to the people and the planets.

Quotes & Catchphrases
"The goal of every dutiful anti-fascist is to oppose it at all cost. To make those who uphold injustice understand the fear of the oppressed that they inflict daily. Upon them, their families, and their friends. There can be no distinguishing between these lines. Radical though it is, only when the tyrant is themselves too afraid to raise the baton, lest we strike their exposed underbelly, can we consider ourselves free." - Louis Poincaré, on action against Unitarian Party Fascists, 2375   "Mankind's future lies in a united post-government system, one in which the needs of the individual are fulfilled, and the needs of the collective are great and noble. It must, else it shall collapse into misguided beliefs of nations and nationalism, or the pursuit of capital and capitalism, or some other design of our own social creation. Until we are truly free of the state, we shall forever be slaves to it." - On the post-PRL future, 2283   "If not now, then never." - On confirming the suicide attack that led to the death of the Consul, the collapse of the PRL, and the beginning of the Lordanian Interregnum, 2279
