People's Republic of Lordania
The People's Republic of Lordania was a totalitarian regime occupying the Lordanian Cluster, led by the Unitarian Party from 2260 until 2280 with Leonard Percy as Consul and Dictator. The Unitarian Party enforced totalitarian rule and crushed dissent and opposition ruthlessly. It oversaw a mass overhaul of the Lordanian economic system and enforced its neo-fascist ideology, known as Unitarianism.
The PRL considered itself a "one-party Unitarian state". The official ideology of the People's Republic was Unitarianism. While it originally held elections, this was ended in 2266 in favour of the fascist doctrine of leader principle. Percy demanded loyalty to the leader above all else, with him at the top, developing an elaborate cult of personality. All positions in the party and government were done through appointment by a higher rank, reflecting the increasing militarisation of the Unitarian Party, largely due to increasing influence of military figures in the Consul's cabal. The Unitarian Party was led by Percy, who held absolute power over the state and the party. Membership was mandatory for any position of authority, as well as the Lordanian Military.
Emphasising a combination of leftist and rightist policies, the state controlled the means of production, ran through state corporations in a policy of state capitalism. Capitalists loyal to the party were offered positions of influence within the corporations. Most social services, such as education and housing, were state-funded. However, as increasing corruption and nepotism seeped into all branches of the regime, these funds became lesser and lesser, instead funding a large military, with surplus pocketed not by the people, but by the state.
The People's Republic enforced a "Lordanian-first" policy. It emphasised the unity between planets of the Cluster, and a rejection of values or ideas beyond it. It enforced the national ideas of antikleptism, and a belief in the superiority of the Lordanian People, whose multi-ethnic heritage, led by Aresian traditions and values, proved they were the true inheritors of Humanity. It recognised the different cultures of the planets, and was extremely tolerant. It was anti-homophobic, anti-racist, and anti-transphobic. It enforced State Atheism, but tolerated religious beliefs, providing they repeated the message of the state. They did not discriminate in their oppression. All Lordanians were equal, but this did not mean they did not commit mass murders and brutal suppression of its people. Anyone who did not show loyalty to the state was declared a Kleptocrat, an enemy to the state. This paranoia led to atrocities across the Cluster, and a mass resentment of fascism.
Lordania maintained closed borders with every other human nation, but mandated a policy of realpolitik, and often held secret meetings with capitalists of Sol and Terra in the interests of personal wealth. The PRL in 2270 had the third powerful military in human space, but by the beginning of the revolution, the effects of corruption and the inevitable consequences of fascism had led to mass desertions and mothballed fleets. Much of this military was for show, and despite an overwhelming force, a combination of superior firepower and tactical ability allowed The Brotherhood to achieve a victory.
Both Sol and Terra had relations with the PRL throughout its existence. While the PRL offered an economic advantage to both nations, in the end, its fascist rhetoric proved too much for either nation, and they both enforced sanctions on Lordania. Multiple NGO and GOs condemned the scale of human rights violations in the cluster. Until its last breath, the PRL denied these abuses.
Structure
When the Unitarian Party was founded in 2248, it was done so as a merger of several smaller organisations and parties. It was founded by Anton Maxwell, but quickly became consumed by the charismatic populism of Leonard Percy.
Disbandment
The end of the People's Republic was foreseen in 2278, when the Lordanian Revolution swept across all planets in the cluster. In '79, the Destruction of the Lordanian Senate by the Brotherhood signalled a death blow to the PRL, which came under the control of a series of sham leaders and warlords.
The People's Republic was effectively disbanded by a group of surviving senators in 2280. Unitarian Remnants hold out on many planets for several more years, but do not make any significant gains. The last surviving Unitarian forces surrender in 2285.
Foreign Relations
The People's Republic initially maintained lukewarm relations with the United Nations of Sol-Aligned Systems and the Gilgamesh Confederation. The Unitarians were keen to expand trading links with the major powers, though it maintained closed borders and limited immigration policies. When the full scale of Unitarian tyranny became clear, both the UNSAS and the GC broke their relations, and publically recognised The Brotherhood.
