Alpha Centauri
Alpha Centauri is the closest star system to Sol, at only 4.37 light-years distance. A trinary system, it is home to three stars; Rigil Kentaurus, Toliman, and Proxima Centauri. Amongst countless orbital habitats, mining, and research stations, the system is home to four colonised exoplanets; Tiamat and Abzu, in obit around Rigil Kentaurus; Qazvini, around Toliman; and Valentina, a tidally-locked superearth in orbit around Proxima Centauri.
The α Cen system Sol's closest neighbor, and has extremely close ties to Mars, dating back to the days of the Ares Confederation. It's loyalty to Mars during those tumultuous decades has earned it a high position of influence within the Sol Senate.
Planets
The system has two occupied exoplanets, both being significantly larger than Earth. They are amongst the oldest colonies established by Humanity, though not the most developed.Tiamat
Tiamat (Alpha Centauri Bb) is a large ocean world. Bigger than Earth by only slightly, it is covered almost entirely by liquid water. In orbit around Rigil Kentaurus, the planet has no landmasses and human settlements are either built as floating cities, or as underwater habitats. The planet is comprised of a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere, and contains a significant amount of marine life. Wherever volcanic islands exist, alien seaweed covers the land in a slick red hue. It is named after Tiamat, a Babylonian goddess. It has a single moon, a small, Enceladus-sized moon, called Abzu.Abzu
Abzu is the moon of Tiamat , located in the Alpha Centauri system around Rigil Kentaurus (Alpha Centauri A). It is a small desert world, with a thin atmosphere steadily being syphoned away by Tiamat. Abzu has several colonies, similar to how Mars was initially settled. It remains in close connection with its parent planet, both being heavily colonised. Much of Abzu's development and infrastructure lies under the surface, built in valleys and cracks across the landscape. Abzu is not united, instead the planet is divided up between four independent states, the Abzu Democratic Republic, the Democratic Republic of Abzu, the People's Republic of Abzu, and the People's Democratic Republic of Abzu. This confusing, impractical, and downright ridiculous approach to naming their nations has caused significant frustration to the United Nations of Sol, as each state is granted representation. For most of Sol, this situation is rectified by addressing each state as Abzu A, Abzu B, Abzu C, and Abzu D. The people of Abzu do not like being reduced to simply a letter, but they also refuse to change their confusing names.Valentina
Valentina (Proxima Centuri b) is a tidally-locked superearth. While it has a thin atmosphere, one side is constantly bathed in light while the other is frozen. Around the terminal line, human colonies have developed into large settlements. It is the closest planet to Sol and serves as the government's largest source of energy and minerals. The planet's powerful magnetic field protects the planet from the violent flares of its parent star, which allows for the existence of life along the habitable terminator line. It is named after Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space. The Valentina Republic is a reasonably major player within the United Nations of Sol. It is a major provider of energy and materials, and a prominent part of the Sol Central District.Qazvini
Qazvini is a hot terrestrial world lying close to Toliman. It is a world of molten lava, with a heavy, sulphur rich atmosphere. Despite these inhospitable conditions, Qazvini has become home to a large number of orbital habitats, connected to various industrial facilities on the surface. The Republic of Qazvini is a major part of the Sol Central District and the United Nations of Sol. Its largest habitat, Azdun, is located in polar orbit, with the Azdun Refining Facility located at the planet's north pole.
