Baohat Free State
The Baohat Free State is a breakaway state from the East Roanoke Confederation that borders the League of Six Planets to the galactic north, and the East Roanoke Confederation via the Roanoke Road. It is also connected to the Enderysin United Communes via the Baohat Gate. Its capital is the Baohat system, from which the state takes its name.
The region was first settled during the later years of the First Solar Republic, as its great expansion came to an end. Following the collapse of the Republic, Baohat, along with much of the Roanoke Zone, went dark to Sol, being forgotten and left to their own. In the early 2280s, the East Roanoke Confederation was founded, with Baohat included. Internal tensions within the Confederation soon began to develop, from cultural to economic and political. In 2299, Baohat and its loyal systems declared their independence from the Confederation. This was largely the result of one major political party, the Pro-Independence movement known as "Self-Determination Party", led by the Baohat's first Premier, Dong Xingshan.
The Free State is largely an unstable but steadily recovering proto-government. While the systems recognise the federal, interplanetary parliament and its laws, it lacks the means to fully enforce them. As such, the system of Ulanatab has become home to a sizable smuggling ring with many of its leaders profiting from it. It is in a precarious position, ready to embrace democracy, or succumb to the will of an oligarchic few.
