After resting briefly we headed further into the caves. After finding several empty side caves we encountered a group of 4 large monstrous creatures. They were not friendly and immediately attacked. There were 3 types. Sir Arathur was able to identify a crab like one as a Brain Collector. Aaron was able to identify another as an Irnakurse, a twisted aberration. It was touch and go for a bit, with several people being dropped, but we eventually managed to win the fight! After the battle we were unable to identify the remaining 2 creatures of the same type. After the fight we spent some time examining bones we found nearby, healing up and looking for valuables. Sir Arathur performed a forensic examination on the bones and found they belonged to Halflings. He also found a note written in Dwarven in the rags of one corpse. The note seemed to indicate someone had attempted to flee East, away from Fort Barbitos, intending to head around the mountains to swing back towards Stormbreaker Cove.
After resting for the night we headed East into the mountains. After 2 days we found the remains of a Lean-To. Examining the former campsite Sir Arathur guessed it had been about a year since this site was used & the Lean-To could fit up to about 6 people. After a few more days we found a cave where the group had obviously taken shelter, but no other major information about them. As we followed the path upwards into the mountains we broke out our cold weather clothing, prepared this time for the cold weather! Soon, we found ourselves on a narrow path, with a cliff up to one side and down to the other. A Blizzard sprang up with visibility being reduced to no more than about 50 feet. We began looking for a place to set up to pass the storm. As we looked we became aware of a large shape in the snowstorm ahead. It turned out to be a White Dragon, as identified by Sir Arathur. It told us it's name was Cadmus, Monarch of the Frigid Peaks. It demanded we bow down. All of us did, with a tense moment when Jemaig resisted the urge, but ended up giving a small nod of deference. We learned that Brunen had passed by, paying tribute to it. We also paid tribute and it allowed us to pass. After a few more days we started descending from the peaks, following further clues along the trail as we went. Another week found us entering a circular valley. There were signs of habitation here, with (building) erections everywhere! Some of the buildings were in a state of disrepair.
We did find a partial journal amongst the abandoned huts. It indicated that Brunen had indeed been with this group. It seemed as if they had been attacked by a group of flying, 3 headed creatures with bat-like wings, losing 2 of their party before retreating into a crevasse nearby. Inside, they found an opening leading down into the mountain. They had not been able to find any other way out of the valley. As we finished searching the camp we were attacked by 3 of the creatures, which Sir Arathur identified as Chimera, 3 headed creatures with with the head of a Goat, a Lion & a Dragon. The Dragon heads used breath weapons appropriate to their color. We were quickly in a lot of trouble, with Vadranna & Aaron down right away. We managed to rally though and defeated all 3 of the creatures! We took the opportunity to rest and heal up, starting fresh in the morning.
