Chapter 40

My story was anything but truthful; filled with lies and deceptions, to hide my identity, to cover up the unpleasant events that had occurred during the past. I had lost many lives in pursuit of trying to live, but it did mean I would stop at nothing just to survive for my father’s last wishes.

I told them that I was born in a happy far away village and was later adopted by Doctor Sol, although I did not give them much information or detailed descriptions of who and how I was raised as it is riskier than what it is worth. As long as they believed me, then I can keep living this lie without anyone knowing.

Suckers these two officers are, they believed every word I spew out from my mouth like a good actor. Although, I do have to admit that both are intelligent enough to pick up on subtle clues and hints to the point of asking some questions, much to my irritation and dismay. But their naivety allowed me to continue my lies and deceits until now.

Our long conversation ended soon after we arrived at our destination as we parked near it, which was a lone and eerie old house that has seen better days. The Strange part of is how separated it is from the rest of the city, even though it is located right next to the highway away from the big city and there were other houses nearby that appeared to be more alive. This said house also looks to be abandoned for quite sometime, with no signs of people or animals coming near it.

It is a really haunted house, hell we can feel strange emotions coming from the building itself as if it was alive, but I am sure this is just our imagination playing tricks on us. The place looked deserted but somehow still alive and vibrant in its own eerie way. It feels so empty and lonely. Makes sense why there were no animals or even birds near its area.

“Why are we here?” Helson asked, his voice sounded somewhat scared, “The house seems to be uninhabited and dangerous. There is nothing here for us to investigate.” He continued, sounding very concerned about the whole situation. I could not blame him since I am too feeling bad vibes coming from that place.

Mano became discouraged after seeing it in person as well, “I do not think this is going to work. What do you say, Detective? We return and look for different case instead?”

Hearing Mano’s suggestion, I turned around to face both detectives, “you guys are chickening out because it is a haunted place? We are the police and we should be able to handle anything that comes our way. If the supernatural exists, then so does the law enforcement. That is what I always believe in.”

Both men nodded their heads in agreement while shaking theirs nervously as they took a deep breath and stared into my eyes, one of them, Helson, spoke up, “You are right Adam. We cannot let another chance of having another unlucky victim entering this house to die, especially when we already have the evidence here that points towards some supernatural entity lurking inside.”

I could not help but smile at that statement as I was glad they agreed with me, “then, shall we begin our investigation?”

“Y-yes,” Mano’s voice was trembling and shaky, trying to hold himself together.

We all exited the police vehicle, closing its doors and locking it before proceeding forward to enter that house. The door then suddenly creaked open as if inviting us in, which made us feel more uncomfortable than ever. But, we were not going to back down just yet.

The moment we entered the family room, everything appeared to become darker and colder. It almost feels as though there is no source of light whatsoever except for what the dim bulbs on the ceiling could provide. However, everything is orderly and neat, “What the hell happened here?” Mano muttered under his breath. His voice sounded scared, “it appears like someone has been living here since the last time it was occupied.” He continued, sounding slightly nervous.

But there is something I want to point out about the case that has been bugging me ever since I arrived here, “Did anyone pick up the dead body in this house after the picture was taken?” I asked both police officers, hoping they would know. They looked puzzled, but then answered, “no one picked it up or did anything with the corpse at all. It should still be here, somewhere in the house.”

Ah, that is good. Makes it a lot easier for me to see it in my own two eyes.

“Interesting, before we go deeper in the house; both of you guys are armed, right?” I asked them while looking at their holstered pistols. Both men nodded with nervous looks on their faces as they took out the handguns from the gun belts attached around their waists, “then let us proceed.”

Before I made another step forward, Mano stopped me by my tracks with his extended hand gripping my shoulder, with his other occupied hand motioning me to take the pistol from him, “you should take my mine Adam. You need it more than us. Additionally, there is no guarantee whatever demon it is will not try to attack you first before us.”

Guns…I do not really like firearms or weapons in general as I do not even need them. The idea of even using them to kill another person is something that I would never do with my own bare hands. Although, it is better if others do it for me. Having to kill something or someone gives me anxiety of my consciousness.

“Nah, don’t need,” I told the surprised Mano after hearing my answer, “as long as I have you guys and your guns, I will be fine.” I continued without hesitation. But he disagreed, letting go of his hand from my shoulder, staring back at me with a disapproving expression, “you might not know what is coming next, so just grab the gun,” Mano urged me.

I looked down upon his occupied hand, the pistol that was still being held by him. He appeared frustrated because I refused to take the weapon from him. It feels strange when I am being asked to take a firearm. I can understand why though; Mano wants me to have something to protect myself from any danger that could come our way. And I respect that as well, but I feel uneasy about having one around me as I always prefer to use my wits rather than my strength, and having to kill something makes me feel uneasy.

I cannot help but sigh before finally answering him with a strong resolve, “You believe that weapons are powerful tools? Understanding and manipulating the human mind is mightier than actions altogether. I can manipulate people into thinking and doing anything-and we call it psychological warfare. Why waste the effort and energy when I can talk them into committing suicide? Why endanger my life for petty things when I can manipulate others to do them for me? Why make enemies when I can make them my mindless servants? With the power of influencing others, I can even turn entire groups against each other, start wars and even get the leading governments to destroy themselves. If that is not true power, I do not know what else to tell you.”

My speech froze them all in place with wide eyes. My words were nothing short of truth as there is no doubt about their existence. Even Mano and his partner are also left speechless after hearing my statement. They were taken aback by how I just spoke so boldly without hesitation. As if I have seen through everything that they believed to be real. For a moment, I was worried whether anyone would believe me, but I am relieved to see them nod at every word I said, agreeing on my words as truth.

“Alright, alright…” Mano place his gun back in his holster, “you made quite a speech there, but I guess you are right in that assumption, after all; why would Mervin send you to persuade a demon of all places to leave?” He said with a small chuckle, making me smile lightly while shaking my head.

Helson coughed to get our attention away from each other, clearing his throat when we finally locked eyes at him, “after you guys is done chatting, we need to find that corpse and finished this case already; the sooner we do it, the better.” I looked over to Mano who nodded in agreement, before turning his gaze towards Helson and nodding again.

The two officers stood side by side with me as we started transverse throughout the house, searching for anything out of place. Although, I could not help but feel that something is off about all these events. The air around us feels heavy, oppressive, dark and sinister. It is like an invisible presence was surrounding us everywhere we go; even though I know there is nothing there.

It took some time before we finally found the body in the bedroom on the second floor, lying dead on the ground with the same opened ribcage being wide open and her innards spilled out onto the floor. Her hands and feet were also missing and her face torn off by something sharp or blunt force trauma. The cause of death seems obvious, yet there is no way that someone can die in such a manner without any trace evidence left behind.

I went ahead to inspect the corpse more closely while Mano and Helson talking amongst themselves in hushed whispers, trying their best not to disturb me. My eyes darted from one part of the room to another, inspecting every corner and crevice of this room as if I am looking for a clue that will lead me somewhere.

Out in the corner of my eye, I spotted a pair of boots sticking out from under the bed. They are still covered with blood stains, but not so much compared to the rest of the floor. As I moved closer, I noticed the laces were undone as well, suggesting that they had been removed recently.

“What the hell…” Mano said quietly while peering at the scene. He then shook his head in disgust, “this is disgusting.” Helson nodded in agreement before turning back towards me and asking; “what do you think Detective Adam?”

“Looks like someone was here just moments ago,” I replied as I continued to look around, “…the body looks freshly killed…and whoever did it must be still here,” I paused for a moment to take in a deep breath and exhale slowly, “or else why would they leave those boots behind? There is no other explanation except that the killer is hiding right now, waiting for us to leave so he can finish what he started.”

Mano frowned and looked over at Helson who also seemed troubled by our findings. Both had been trained in police work so I could see how they were confused about this case. However, I am not sure if they are capable enough to understand the situation we are currently facing.

I stepped forward as I grabbed hold of the closet door and pulled it open with a loud creak. Inside, I found a pile of clothes scattered on top of each other and nothing more. No bloodstains or any indication that someone was murdered inside there, which means the killer probably came within the home and was summoned by a certain charm. The question is how was he summoned by?

There was only one possibility, a ritual to summon a demon. But where is it located? I have yet to find it. My eyes glanced over to the floor once again before remembering seeing a hidden pentagram inside the ribcage of the corpse.

I head back to where the dead old woman is laying, kneeling down beside her and examining her opened ribcage with eyes wide open. Her ribs were easily torn off through unknown means, leaving the interior cavity exposed. What is even stranger is that the said pentagram is drawn in blood on the exterior flesh.

Many scenarios run across my mind, different possible simulations but nearly all of them are related to some sort of occult practice or religion. Two scenarios I find to be more highly accurate are that this woman was responsible for bringing or summoning the demon into this home.

Both selected scenarios are a sign that the demon is not hiding or wondering in this home; more in being the house itself. The thought of it brought me back to the reality that we have landed ourselves in its trap.

I stood up from the ground, looking at the two officers with serious faces and an intense stare as they looked at me, “we need to get out of here,” I stated.

Mano nodded his head, agreeing with my statement. Helson, on the other hand was questioning why we need to leave so quickly, “…are you sure?” he asked.

“I will explain later but we need to get the fuck out of this house first,” I responded. Helson frowned, taking a deep breath before gesturing us to follow him outside. As soon as the three of us exited the bedroom, we could feel the cold air coming into contact with our skin, which made us shiver. It felt like the temperature had dropped ten degrees since just a few minutes ago.

Helson and Mano both stared at me in disbelief while walking down the stairs to the family room. However, something came unexpected; when Helson tried to open the door, it was locked from the inside. “Dammit!” he cursed loudly as he placed his hands on the doorknob, trying to turn it with no success. He turned around to look at me, “the lock is broken.”

Before I could say a word, the whole house began shaking violently. Items started falling off shelves and tables, causing them to shatter on the floor. Other than that, the sound of shattering glass could be heard from all over the place. A wave of fear ran through our bodies as we witnessed everything happening. The ground also trembled, making it hard for us to stay upright.

“Shit!” I yelled out loud as another shockwave struck the entire building. This time, it caused the windows to burst outwards, leaving large holes in its wake. Glass shards were everywhere on the floor, some even embedded themselves in their skins.

Luckily for me, my body move by its own accord; dodging all the glass shards that flew at us. However, Helson and Mano did not react as fast as me because they were caught off guard. They had been hit directly by one or two pieces of glass shard and it pierced right into their skin.

“Ahhhh!” They screamed in pain. “Fuck!” I cursed out loud, looking back at them. Both stood up from the ground, holding onto each other’s arm while groaning in agony. Blood seeped through the gaps in their clothing where the glass was embedded.

The fucking demon is here and it is toying with us.

Mano looked at me in disbelief as Helson glared angrily. “We need to get out of this house now,” he said to me, ignoring his wound. I nodded in agreement as Mano helped him stand up. As soon as both men made it to their feet, they were violently pushed by invisible force, sending them crashing against the wall.

“Ouch!” Mano yelled as blood oozed from the wounds on his shoulder. Helson’s head slammed hard into the floor after being thrown across the room. His face contorted in pain, leaving a deep gash on his forehead.

Fuck, fuck! I need to think something fast! I can sense the demon now, it is hidden and I cannot see it, but I can sure as hell feel its presence.

“The Freeman…” the demonic voice called out my name, sounding like it came from everywhere at once. It was also accompanied by the sound of laughter that sent shivers down our spine.

I could not believe what I was hearing. My first encounter with the supernatural and the most terrifying moment of my entire existence. The demon is here. He has come for us. For me. A wave of fear swept over me as the ground shook violently again, making it hard to stay upright. All around, objects started falling off shelves and tables, shattering on the floor.

“You call yourself a demon?! Then why don’t you show yourself to us so we can clarify your claim?!” I yelled out loud, trying to lure out the thing that was hiding from us. For what appeared to be a few seconds, everything around us returned to normal with one visible exception.

The whole room is foggy and filled with white misty clouds. “Ahhh…!” Mano shouted in fright as he covered his face in pure terror while Helson looked like he wanted to puke. The two of them appear to be slowly losing their grip in reality, becoming more insane than before and just standing there like a couple of zombies. They are about to breakdown into tears and beg for help if this continues any longer.

However, now I understand why they are losing their sanity, the sudden presence from behind me had resulted my attention to shift away momentarily. As I turnaround to meet whatever presence is lingering near, I find myself facing the demon itself.

A tall humanoid figure stood there, clad in dark clothing with a long cloak covering most of its body except for its head. Black hair with horns flowed freely on top of the creature’s head as it smirked at me with an evil grin. “Freeman…” he repeated with a sinister tone.

My eyes widen for a moment before mustering up my courage to speak. “You must be the demon that has been terrorizing this home,” I said coldly as my voice quivered slightly due to the fear inside of me.

The demonic being cocked his head to one side, amused by my statement. It was then when he smiled in an ugly way that made him look even more terrifying. “Yes, I am the one that is responsible. Why do you ask?” He asked while turning back towards the window.

Feeling the growing fear inside of me in coming face to face that is not human or even mutant in that matter, I took out a cigar and lit it up as I walked closer to the demon. “I would like to know who you exactly are.” I said as calmly as possible despite how nervous I felt in front of this…thing.

It bellowed in laughter, “Ah yes! You want to know more about me. But why would I tell you? I am a demon after all!” The thing laughed loudly, amused by my response.

“Did the dead old woman brought you here?” Taking a puff of my cigar, I looked at the demon with disdain, “is there any reason for killing her in such a brutal manner?” I asked again.

The creature shook its head. “No. No reason. I just wanted to kill someone. So I did. And you were conveniently standing right next to the old lady. She was easy prey too. Easy, prey. The human wanted to be young again, but instead; I killed her; ripped her ribcage opened and tore her face off, hehe,” he grinned wickedly as if it pleased him to say those things.

“So what now? What will you do to me? To us?” My voice challenges the demonic figure with a hint of taunt in my tone. I am afraid of this thing, yet curious and unafraid simultaneously. I want to see how far this goes, I then place my cigar back into my mouth before continuing on, “kill us? devour us? What will it take to make you return to hell?”

He cocked his head to one side as if he was trying to decipher something from my words. “I do not know…perhaps I should have eaten your soul already. Then I could possess you.” He said with a sinister grin, “but what is stopping me from doing so?” It appeared like he had thought of that before.

Hmm, this freak is taunting me or perhaps even testing how much fear I have in front of him. Well, if he wants to play this game then lets play it.

“There are many reasons why I would not allow you to do anything as long as we both live. Continuing this parade will not help you continue your acts but instead only cause more trouble for yourself. Why I asked? Because there is some exorcist or psyker that will sent you back to hell,” I replied with a confident tone, “and I can guarantee they won’t stop until they find you and rip you apart from limb to limb.”

The demon chuckled darkly, “I am not scared. Not unfazed by it all either.” He raised his hand, pointing his finger at me. “I enjoy playing games with people like you.” The creature grinned, revealing sharp fangs in its mouth, “because I am a demon. And demons love to play with their food,” he laughed in amusement.

I did the same, mocking him, ” what is your name?” He looked at me, then shrugged his shoulders, “what does it matter? You will die soon anyway. It is a matter of when, not if.”

“Well, if you insist…” I paused for a moment. Thinking hard about my next move. But then I decided to ask another question, “do you really want to kill me? Or are you just bluffing?”

His eyes widened for a second, surprised by the fact that I actually asked such a thing. Then he shook his head, “why would I waste time on killing someone who is already going to be dead sooner or later?”

I laughed, catching the demon off guard from my sudden response, “you are an idiot.” He blinked, not understanding what was so funny. I continued laughing, “your kind are always arrogant like that and think you have the upper hand over everything. But in reality, you do not know shit about anything other than how to eat human souls. That is why you keep losing against us humans, because we do not fear death as much as you. We even welcome it. “

He frowned, “who said I feared it? You should learn your place.”

I chuckled again, shaking my head. “Your arrogance is something I cannot understand, but I am sure that somewhere out there, there are some people who would appreciate this quality of yours. So tell me demon, what are you afraid of?”

The creature stared at me with dark eyes before he began to speak, “fear? What makes you think I am afraid of anything?”

I shrugged my shoulders, “well, why do you fear holy concepts?”

“What does it matter what I fear or not?” He replied, “it does not change the fact that I will kill you.” His eyes narrowed as if to show his disdain towards me.

It did not stop me from continuing, “you kind are afraid of anything holy. God, the cross and crosses, crucifixes, angels, heaven…anything related to these concepts frightens you. Why do you think that is?”

His lips curled into a confident sinister grin, “because it is what we are,” he answered with pride. Resulting me to chuckle once more, “what makes you so sure about all of this?”

He paused for a moment as he looked at me. As if he was contemplating whether to answer my question, “hmm…” The demon tilted his head back and thought to himself before answering, “why do you ask such questions?”

“Well, lets see, you just told me you are afraid of anything holy which is something that your kind fears because it represents what you are. But what if there is a way to stop having those fears?” My sudden offer picked his interest, staring at me with curious eyes.

The demon raised an eyebrow, “how do you propose to solve this problem?” He questioned me, “there is no solution.” It appeared like he was reluctant to talk about the subject of fearing anything holy.

I smirked, “that is why I am purposing you offer, to stop being afraid of these things. And since you do not have a choice in the matter, how would you feel if someone else were to take control over that fear? Someone who is demon like you that does not have fear anymore?”

His eyes widened, “you can do this?” He asked with astonishment.

“Yes,” I nodded my head as I continued, “I know a way for you to be free from such simple emotions or weakness. Just give me your word and I will tell you.” His gaze grew intense as he looked at me.

He snorted before replying, “very well freeman, tell me this ‘offer’ of yours.” He stared at me with curiosity, waiting for me to continue.

I sighed, “bring this two men from behind with you in hell, you can do whatever with them and I promise you; you will not be afraid again.” The demon narrowed his eyes, trying to identify my intentions.

“What is so special about these two humans?” He asked curiously, not buying into my offer.

I shrugged, turning my head at them, “they are key to your freedom.” I turned back around, continuing, “the fact that they both carry the same fear of demons makes you and them alike. Experiment them, do you what you want and I assure you, you will ascend to heaven and get rid of your fears once and for all.”

Then the demon laughed, his amusement echoing throughout my ears, “you are right freeman. Leaving this world just to experiment with my new toys is worth trying. Very well, I take your offer. And after all, what is use for those two when they are already insane? HA HA HA!” It chuckled before teleporting towards the insane and frightened cops, vanishing from sight in the blink of my eye after taking them away.

The fog disappeared, allowing a sense of relief to escape me. I discard my cigar by throwing it on the ground as I knelt down on the floor with my two legs, placing my opened palms on the floor. I took deep breaths, feeling lightheaded as I tried to calm myself down, realizing that I was almost done for.

“Oh god…” I cannot bear myself knowing that I had to sacrifice these two just to make that freak leave this place. I thought, closing my eyes as I let out another sigh, steadily standing up from the ground. “I am so sorry…Jesus Christ, I am really sorry Helson, Mano. If it means to prevent anymore lives being lost, then I had no choice but to do this.”

My voice became heavy with sorrowful tones, knowing that I did what had to be done to protect the people here. The pain inside me grows heavier by the moment, wishing there was something else I could have done to stop him from coming back. But what done is done and there is no turning back now.

“I am such a sick bastard, ha ha…”
