Chapter 62

Peacefully driving through the busy city of New York with Eve is a blissful feeling to have with someone at my side; moving through this massive metropolis with her feels more like a dream than reality. However, the traffic was a bit much. The noise and fumes are unpleasantly unbearable. But with patience and time, we made it out. Afterward, we arrived at our destination as we place the red sports car of ours near the sidewalk, parking it just under a small awning.

The police station, such a plain sight where cops have to deal with the common occurrence of shit this city has to offer. I wonder what those cops have to do every single day of their lives? Sure, a numerous amount of officers are corrupted, but the cops in this police station are less…corrupt. Perhaps the boss is really doing his job and cracking down on all corrupt cops.

Not like I give a shit about people I never met and care for, right now I need to get inside with Eve to start our ordinary job of catching scumbags. Not like I do not do that sort of stuff on a daily basis. It is a simple job for detectives and investigators like myself; for someone else with less capable hands than mine could have done it easily.

As we went inside and headed to Chief Walker’s door, knocking on it loudly three times. I hear the footsteps from the inside, preparing himself before he opens the door. “It’s you, I will just get to the point; I am currently busy now so I do not have time to chat with you. Although, I would like you to get involved with this case instead,” Walker handed me a binder in which I did not notice he was holding it from earlier.

“What is this about?” I asked. I was confused by Walker’s sudden request on my involvement with a case. Although I have no idea what was in it besides a few documents. I did not look inside it yet. He is probably just in a hurry or something, but he handed me the binder so it must be important.

“Sorry kid, I do not have much time as I am currently involved with an interesting prisoner for interrogation. At the meantime, I would like you to do this job for me,” he then took out his own cell phone and punched certain numbers on it. He held up his arm towards his right as he started talking on the phone. “Yes sir; we got him over here.” The chief hung up the phone before looking at me, “duty calls, I will explain everything later after you finish the case.”

He shut the door closed at our faces, I wanted to say something but I did not know what to say when he hurriedly left out of sight. I sighed; I guess it is better to read this binder and its documents that my boss had told me to, besides; it is a way to pass some time.

“Adam? Should we be already reading the documents for this case?” Eve asked before walking next to me. I nodded as she continued, “I purpose we do read them in a more private area like in our vehicle,” she suggested. She was right as there was not much privacy in public buildings where passing people are usually adjacent to each other.

I smiled and replied, “that sounds like a good idea Eve,” we both started walking towards the exit of this police station before turning around and walking out of the building together. Taking simple steps down outside in the front entrance, we went to where we parked our car. I unlocked the doors with my key before entering the vehicle. Eve followed me in shortly after.

Starting the engine up, I turned on the air conditioner to warmer setting while Eve turned on the heater so that we would be more comfortable being inside this red sports car. We remained motionlessly on our seats, the warmth air and silent atmosphere created in this car was pleasant. It is quiet here except for the sound of the car engine running as we remained seated and waiting awkwardly for either of us to begin reading the contents inside the binder and its documents.

“Well? Are you ready?” Eve asked me, her dreariness tone of voice. I wanted to keep my mouth shut in enjoying this moment of peace but she made me speak up; so I nodded at her question before answering with a polite tone. “I am ready.” I felt like we had gone to a dungeon or something where I had to prove myself worth enough to enter the inner sanctum before proceeding to another level in a game.

Whichever comes to hand, I need to start reading the documents in this binder to learn more about this assignment that the chief had handed us with. “Let us see what is in store for us…” I opened the binder, checking the documents and reading them one by one in quick succession, taking my time while I did so. After I finished with each document and feeling exhausted with all this reading.

However, I am also in disbelief of what I just read. It was rather gruesome when the documents added factors of disturbing images regarding this person’s evil deeds. What is more frightening was that this person was not even a child or an adult, but rather having sketch of the wanted criminal resembling an old woman around in her 70’s or older.

“Are you finished…Adam, is something wrong?” Eve asked me, appearing to have observed my behavior. Her observation was right when I turned to her in horror, “I think you need to read this,” I handed the papers and binder to her.

Eve nodded as she looked at the contents, her casual and unbothered expression always remained cool but this time it was different. After finishing up reading the reports, her eyes are now glazed over in shock and disgust. “Adam,” Eve called out my name, her face still pale like she was completely sick from what she read from that document.

“What?” I was curious to hear someone like her. Eve has always appeared as a cold-hearted woman as she never bothered about anything or anyone, only concerned about herself and her own interests, including those she cares about. But this time around I realize she has a different side after reading those papers.

She looked at me with an expression that appeared to be full of anguish and sorrow while she whispered out loud, “This is my mother.” She explained while looking at me with a grave look on her face. “I thought she was long dead; but she appears never to have died at all.” Her words are like a sword piercing my heart, still staring at me with so much concern that it feels like she is looking into my soul.

How is this possible when Eve just saw a simple sketch of an old woman who barely resembled her said mother? My mind is in a whirlwind as I look at Eve with astonishment. I must have reacted too fast towards the sketch drawing in the documents.

“How do you exactly know it’s her, Eve? Its just a sketch after all,” I questioned Eve about the details of her mother whom she had just learned she is still alive after all. “Perhaps it could be someone else that looked like her?” I refuted Eve’s words by insisting that it could be another old lady with a similar appearance, though Eve did not appear convinced with my statement.

“It’s not, Adam…” Eve rebutted my comment by shaking her head, “I know she is my mother. Since when I was just a kid, I can always sense and see who my mother is by looking at her face or appearance, even if she wears a full costume that covers her entire body; I know it is her because I can see my own mother’s eyes.”

There is no point in continuing this conversation, because Eve is convinced that her mother is really still alive and the simple sketch is her parent. I nodded in agreement albeit unsure of this predicament of Eve’s situation.

“Whether she is your mother or not, we need to apprehend her,” I continued my train of thought by explaining to Eve that we need to find this woman, “it is our job after all,” I told her like I am certain that we would have a successful outcome with this endeavor.

“I..understand,” Eve turned away from me, blankly staring at her side window while her mouth remained shut tight. This is not like Eve at all; I am never sure what to say or even expect of Eve at any point of time. I have been dealing with her this way ever since we met. I sighed and shrugged my shoulders before driving to the designation of the latest crime scene where it holds important information for us to learn.

We drove to the public and busy roads of New York City, taking turns and passing through traffic of vehicles. Throughout our trip to the location we are told to investigate, we caught sight of road rage incidents that occur here and there, like people angrily honking their horns at other vehicles or driving recklessly as they drove the roadways. There are other occasions where drivers exit their vehicles to fight physically and verbally abuse amongst themselves.

I just love this fucking city, such great and amazing people in sarcastic and cynical ways.

After some time, we arrived at the place. It is an impoverished neighborhood in the city with many houses and buildings covered in litter or graffiti of different colors and sizes.

“It looks like this is where the murder took place,” I used my eyes, scanning at peculiar house being surrounded by police officers investigating the scene of murder with various questions being asked of each one of them as they carried out their duties. I was eager to discover what answers they could come up with by questioning all the neighbors in this community.

First thing first is to take part in this scene.

“Is that the place?” Eve commented, pointing out where is police vehicles surrounding around the house I mentioned from earlier. We parked the car right beside the entrance of the house which is actually in front of our eyes while we were getting out of our vehicle. There are several police cars with many cops standing outside and inside the house, while some are still at the side entrance.

One of them walked up to us after noticing our presence, an older and abused man with a visible bald head and long yellow mustache while standing out the rest as he wore a sheriff’s uniform, “we are under investigation of a crime scene, please leave as we are authorized not to allow civilians to interrupt our investigation.”

“Actually, Chief Walker sent us to take part in this case,” I replied, his eyes widen from the mention of that name. He squinted his eyes, looking down and up at us as if he was expecting either of us to say something else, “he sent you two here? I expected the two of you to be…never mind, you can come inside the house and do whatever you guys need to do. Just do not take anything without our permission, you got it?”

“You heard the man,” I said to her, “lets get going,” we entered the home, the many officers present giving us strange and weird glances at us. They were curious about what we are doing here, but they were not willing to ask questions, likely that it is their duty to act like good cops.

Hopefully we find this criminal, the information provided from the binder was both intriguing and shocking to say the least. This person we are going to apprehend needs some mental examination for the things she done.

And for someone who is a mass murderer and cannibalistic psycho that kidnaps babies to cook and eat them, that old woman is one hell of an abnormality.
