She was not so much of a helper even if she tried to be one as I had to give her directions in where the police station should be located. We had walked through the snowstorm with our hands held tightly together, only allowing each other to feel warmth and comfort in this freezing weather. The snowfall got heavier as we went further into the city, covering every corner of the road and sidewalk that I can see in front of us.

Putting aside that thought, I wanted to comment that I could still move and use my left arm as long it is not performing too much physical activity, which I would rather avoid for now. Hence why I can drive that white ford truck that we had stolen earlier from a small outskirts of town.

After some time, we were able to reach the police station, motioning her to stop before letting go of her hand, “we are here,” I said, standing in front of the building, “this is where I worked,” I added, looking at the place, “and yes, before you question any further; this is police station and I am police detective that worked there.” I turned around to face her once again, “come on, I want to introduce you to a couple of people that I know.”

She nodded, walking beside me towards the entrance, “very well.”

We entered the main public lobby, which is also a waiting room for visitors and employers alike. It was somewhat active with several officers and visitors talking about something or other, but none of them paid attention to us. I led her to the hallway and then door that belongs to Mervin’s office, where he works. We knocked twice, which resulted in his immediate response, “come on in!” The voice of Mervin sounded happy despite being in a working environment, as if it were just another day for him. As I opened the door, he looked up to see who was at the door and smiled warmly upon seeing me, “hello detective, how did your first job as a cop go? And who is this?”

Mervin sat on his comfortable chair behind his busy desk, having taken notice of Eve when she walked inside, “a friend of yours I trust?” He asked while looking at her, gesturing to the empty chairs across from him.

“Yes,” I replied, sitting down next to Mervin, “she is someone important.” She sat down in a nearby seat and stared blankly at Mervin, not knowing what to do after seeing mutant humanoid mouse-like creature in front of her very own eyes.

The mouse nodded politely, “ah, I see. Then mind explaining to me who you might be, young lady?” Mervin asked curiously, looking at Eve with a curious gaze, “a lover perhaps?” He chuckled lightly, causing Eve and me to frown slightly.

“Eve,” I whispered in her ear, “you can go ahead and introduce yourself.”

She nodded, facing the mutant, “I am Eve and I am here because…” She paused briefly, taking a quick glance at me before continuing, “…because I want to help him. Let us team up together if that is okay with you.” Her tone was firm, but polite, which gave Mervin no choice but to nod.

“Of course, dear. I would love to have an ally like you,” he said, smiling kindly at her. “So, why are you interested in helping him? You must know by now how dangerous it is for us out there as cops.” He then leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, “there have been many cases of people getting killed or abducted during their duty. We all fear for our lives when we work alone. I would not blame you if you did not want to stay with us anymore.”

Her brows raised a bit, “how come? I am assa-” I quickly covered her mouth before she could finish saying the term, speaking in her behalf, “what Eve is saying that she had experiences regarding dealing with dangerous people like assassins for example,” truthfully, Eve herself is assassin but if I tell him that, then she would get a lot of trouble from the law and I do not want to see my friend getting hurt because of that.

I drop my hand from her mouth, “she is also trying to explain to you that she knows what she is doing.” Mervin chuckled lightly, “ah yes. That makes sense,” he then turned back towards me with curious eyes, “lets put this topic aside. Mind explaining to me where Mano and Helson are? I supposed that the two officers had headed home or…?” He trailed off, looking at either of us curiously.

“They are both dead.” I replied bluntly. It was hard to say such words, but it needed to be said for him to understand the severity of the situation we were currently facing, “they died…from our encounter with the demon that I persuaded with,” this is half-truth, I sacrificed them as a bargain for that monster to leave this world.

Mervin furrowed his brows, confusion on his face. The man stared at me intensely, probably trying to read my expression through my facial expressions, “what do you imply by ‘our’ encounter with a demon?” I sighed deeply, trying to find the right way to explain everything without hurting Mervin’s feelings. “Trust me, you do not want to know the details,” I muttered quietly, “just take my word for it. They have been murdered by something, and that creature is responsible for their deaths. But don’t worry, they did not die in vain.”

Please, for the love of god just stop asking anymore questions, damn mouse!

He leaned back in his seat, caressing his furry chin in thought while staring into the ceiling, “you know what? It is my fault for bringing you, Mano and Helson in this case regarding demon. I should have sent you three to less dangerous assignments,” Mervin then turned his gaze towards me, standing up with a bow of apology, “I am sorry, Adam. I was careless to think that it would be okay to send you guys out there. I should assigned you all to safer assignment,” he shook his head in disappointment.

My lips curled into an understanding smile, “it is fine, Mervin. You do not need to apologize, what is done is done. We already lost two good officers, but I had they did not die in vain remember? I managed to persuade that demon to leave,” I explained.

“Indeed, indeed…” Mervin replied with a nod of agreement as he sat down, “how about you have a day off for tomorrow? A reward and apology for succeeding in such a difficult case young detective,” the mouse suggested.

Oh sweet! A day off, that is great news! Thank god I will finally get some rest from what just transpired on my first day of the job, “that sounds like an excellent idea.” I agreed, smiling broadly at him. Mervin nodded back, “very well detective, I will see you after tomorrow,” he waved goodbye, motioning us to leave his office.

I stood up, followed by Eve, walking towards the door. As we exited Mervin’s office and closed the door, I turned to Eve who was merely staring at me the whole time, “Eve, don’t tell these cops or anyone about your profession,” I whispered. She frowned deeply upon hearing my warning, “why?” she asked in confusion, looking around for eavesdroppers.

“Because you worked in an illegal field and if word gets out, it would cause some ruckus for the both of us. Just trust me in this, okay?” I replied, placing a hand over her shoulder. She looked at me with worried eyes before nodding in agreement, “okay.” We walked down the hallways, passing by officers and employers alike.

By some unknown force of fate, Eve accidentally bumped of familiar person that is none other than the boss himself, Chief Walker, the commissioner. The two exchanged glances while I pretended not to notice him. After they passed by each other, Eve looked at me, “do you know that person?” She whispered in my ear.

“Yeah, his sort of my boss. The man is Chief Walker or simply Walker, his the commissioner of this police station,” I answered as I pointed to the figure walking away from us, “his also the guy that recruited me.” Eve nodded, understanding. As we continued walking down the hallway, she turned to me once again and asked, “was yesterday and now, your first day of the job?” Eve looked seemingly concerned, wondering how am I doing so far.

Ha ha…good one Eve. So lets see, first day of the job; had fucking leprechaun of all places entered in my home, experienced my rather first supernatural encounter, almost died from bargaining with a demon and lastly, some asshole sent an assassin to kill me. How’s that for a successful first day? I chuckled, shaking my head.

“It was, uh, not bad?” I replied to her in amusement as we reached the main entrance of the building. The cold breeze hit our face like an icy hammer but the sun now shone brightly above us, its snowstorm had been extinguished and the temperature rose significantly to its normal state. It felt nice, finally the weather warmed up in this frozen, cold and snowy planet.

“Its normal again,” Eve commented with relief.

I smiled, glad to hear that it has returned to a more pleasant climate after the blizzard ceased, “yeah, at least we do not have to worry about getting frostbite anymore,” I added. Eve nodded in agreement, looking satisfied by what I said before I casually approached towards my red sports car, followed by Eve who walked beside me with a neutral expression on her face.

“This is your car?” She asked as we stopped in front of it, noticing the unique design of its exterior.

“Yeah, you can say this is mine,” I answered untruthfully while unlocking and opening the door for her to get inside, “it is pretty much standard though, nothing special or extraordinary compared to other cars around here,” I added with a shrug.

“You drive this?” She questioned as she sat down in the leather seats, which were surprisingly warm and comfortable to sit on. “Yep, this is my car,” I replied, starting the engine and pulling out of the parking lot, “but no one else drives it aside from me.”

Eve stared at me curiously with a confused look in her eyes, wondering why I would keep such a fancy vehicle all to myself. “This car looks quite flashy,” Eve commented with bewilderment.

It is quite fancy and extravagant for an ordinary guy like me. Although, she does not know that it was someone ‘generous’ enough to hand it over me, heh.

I drove along the road leading us towards my home in the city, passing by numerous buildings and houses, including other vehicles on the public road. It was a rather busy place, filled with people who live their daily lives. People went about shopping, eating at restaurants and doing whatever they wanted without a care of what had just occurred.

It was strangely a normal time for us, especially the many events that transpired in my first assignment as a police detective. Having a quick glance at her, she silently stared at the window on her side, watching the pedestrians on the sidewalk go past our car. Her attention on them made me intrigued of why she looked so distant, but I did not bother asking her. After all, there are some things that need to be kept secret between friends.

“Ever been to this city, Eve?” I started off, trying to break the silence between us, “pretty nice place am I right?” She turned towards me with a blank expression on her face, staring at me for several seconds before answering, “it is quiet, almost boring,” she added, turning back at the window again, “and to answer your question, no I have not been in city,” Eve explained while shifting uncomfortably into the seat, “but this place has always reminded my old home.”

Her voice sounded cold and dulled down due to being unable to show any emotions around others. Yet, there were hints of sadness and disappointment when she mentioned her old home. Perhaps because it was once the place where she lived with her family or perhaps she misses the memories she had from her childhood?

Whatever the case, our bond would be strengthened through this trip together. It is not everyday that I get to know someone that shares possible similar interests with me in terms of wanting to discover more about each other’s past.

“Oh…I see. Do you mind telling me where your old home was?” I asked, focusing on the road as I engage in this conversation with Eve. Her glancing eyes turned away from me and stared back at the window once more, contemplating for a moment before answering, “not yet,” she muttered, “perhaps next time when I am ready,” she answered, her tone indicating that I should wait until then.

It appeared like something bad had happened between her and her old home. Perhaps, her parents were killed or sold to some organization? That could explain why she was somewhat distant towards me during our first meeting.

In any case, I would like to know her more when we finally get home, that is.
