Chapter 32

My thoughts were halted in their tracks when I sensed the presence of someone different than the police officers in this police station. It always felt like my senses were heightened so much that I could detect anyone who is sneaking up behind or hiding from me without having to see them physically.

The door opened, revealing to be a black-skinned older adult man wearing a black suit and blue tie with black sunglasses, Afro hair and mustache that made him look like a business man from the 1960s. He had his hands tucked into the pockets of his black attire and walked towards me at a slow pace before sitting near the office desk, staring at me intensely. His gaze was piercing through me, making me uncomfortable even though he does not appear hostile.

He then opened his mouth, introducing himself, “my name is Chief Walker, head commissioner of this police station,” Walker stated as if it was obvious.

Just like before, I stayed silent; trying not to care anything anymore. The chief stared at me for quite some time until he broke the silence by speaking again. “So, you are Adam?” He asked with a curious tone, looking at me intently.

I kept my expression blank, but I was nonetheless surprised that he knew my name. Although, I continued my silence because I have given up all hope of trying to live a normal life.

“You do not talk much do ya? You must be pretty smart then, I will give you that,” Walker said, still staring at me intensely. Then, he stood up from his chair and went around the table, standing in front of me as he sits, “I can see through your eyes, a young man that went through tragedies early on in his life.”

It took me some time to understand what he meant, but when I did, I instantly got goosebumps. Is he talking about me? My past is something so terrible and painful, how could someone understand what I have been through?

He continued, “and here you are, a broken doll who lost all of his humanity and meaning in living. But you are still here, alive but lacking purpose, direction, or even motivation to survive. You are not certain where you should go from here,” he said with an eerie calm voice.

I remained silent; unable to answer him as I had no words to say back.

What Chief Walker said is true, hell, I am a miserable human being, full of doubt and pain, but should I just give up? I do not have the answer to it, but Walker might be right after all.

“Well, let us get down to business shall we?” He stated with a cold tone, making me flinch a bit in surprise. “You know why you are here, correct?”

Of course, why wouldn’t it be?

“Yes, it is because I am the sole survivor in that destroyed facility and was barely unharmed by the explosion,” I answered in a cold and emotionless tone, unable to display any emotions towards Walker or anything else around me.

Walker simply nodded at my response, then looked up and gazed into the ceiling for a moment. “It is indeed unfortunate that you were able to escape unscathed, but I must ask you one thing,” he brought his head down, looking straight into my eyes even though he is wearing black sunglasses, “did you bomb the place you worked in?”

The serious look on his face made me pause for a second in disbelief, the idea of me going so far to hurt those I cared about and loved most makes me feel disgusted and ashamed. How could I possibly harm innocent people? Especially the ones who are close to me like family or friends?

Then again, I never did commit such a horrendous act, “No, I did not,” I said with a hint of anger in my voice, “and would never do such a thing in my entire life,” my tone carried some bitterness in it.

“Why? You appear to be hiding something from me…” He asked, narrowing his eyes at me while looking suspiciously and skeptically. “Are you trying to hide your true identity as a terrorist?”

I have enough of this bullshit!

Without even a second glance, I stood up in anger and grief all over me as I violently thrown my opened palms at the surface of the table, staring angrily at him while sobbing uncontrollably, “fuck you. Do you think I would do something like that? Even to consider killing my friends and family is beyond my moral standards! SO SHOVE YOUR ACCUSATIONS UP YOUR ASS AND LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE!”

Walker frowned, pulling out a cigar and lighter from his pockets as he lit it up. He puffed on the cigar nonchalantly before blowing smoke away, “so you were not lying Adam. You were telling the truth the whole time,” a smile appeared on his face for a moment but quickly faded when I glared at him with burning rage, “want a cigar?”

I want to fucking hit him, throw this table and everything else around me just to vent my frustrations. But I cannot do anything stupid right now because we are trapped in this room together. It is either stay calm and wait patiently until the door opens or find another way out.

But Walker was not going to let me go that easily as he smirked, puffing more smoke from his cigar, “try a cigar, it will calm your nerves,” he pulled out another cigar and handed it to me, “take it.”

What the fuck am I supposed to do with this thing?

“Here, try it. Don’t worry, they are somewhat harmless. In fact, smoking these will help you relax and feel better,” he assured.

Why the hell not? There is nothing else for me to lose, since my adopted father and future wife are fucking dead because of me. So what the fuck do I have left to lose anyway? “Fine,” I quickly took it from him and put it into my mouth, “now what?” I rudely demanded while staring him down, causing him to laugh at me as if I did or asked something incredibly stupid.

“You know how to light up a cigar, right?” He teased, smirking and puffing on his cigar nonchalantly, as he looked like an arrogant asshole. “It is easy,” he told me in a matter-of-fact tone, handing me a lighter.

“What even is this?” I grumbled. I was not too fond of what I was about to do and I never had any interest in doing so. Although, Walker was trying to make me feel at ease by giving me a cigarette. “Cigar,” he explained, “before you put it between your lips, hold it with your hands and light it up with the lighter I just gave you,” Walker demonstrated, “once it starts burning, then place it between your lips and inhale,” he added.

I took the lighter and lit it before holding it between my fingers and placing the end of the cigar into my mouth. When I finally exhaled the smoke, a wave of low euphoria and calmness washed over me as I felt relaxed. “I feel strange…” I commented from the sensation that coursed through my body after smoking.

Walker smiled, “yeah, you will get used to it,” he said with an arrogant tone, “smoking is a way to relax and unwind yourself, especially during stressful times.”

As I started to take another drag, Walker continued, “but be careful, don’t go overboard. You might run the risk of lung cancer and other breathing problems,” he warned me with a stern voice. I could see his concern for my health but all I wanted to do was escape from reality and have some peace.

“Thanks for the clarification,” I replied sarcastically. I now know exactly how dangerous this can be, yet I am still willing to try because I need a break from everything. I have been feeling like shit lately and having lung cancer is not so bad when I deeply want to die anyway.

“Well, since were done here,” Walker told me while putting away his cigar, “are you interested in becoming a detective for us?” His words alerted my ears, having me caught of guard. I never thought that Walker would offer such an opportunity of someone like me.

But it smells suspicious. Why would he, a Police Chief and Commissioner of all places, want to recruit a broken man like myself?

“Something does not add here,” my eyes squinted at him, analyzing his facial features. Studying every detail about his appearance before it hit me like a ton of bricks. “You need more recruits, is that why?” I asked bluntly. He looked surprised by my sudden question.

A couple of seconds’ silence paused before he spoke up, “yes, we do need more police officers. You see, we only have hundred in this station and most of the police stations are corrupt,” Walker explained, “and you might be thinking, how different are the other police stations from here? Unlike them, I actually give shit of protecting innocent people and serving justice to those who deserve it.”

I was stunned to hear what he just said, “you sound pretty damn sincere,” I complimented. Walker nodded in agreement as we stood there silently for a moment, his face looking like he wanted to say something else but did not know where to start.

Guess it is time to give the answer, “if I join your group, will you promise me that we would find the person responsible for the destruction of my facility?” I asked with no hesitation. Walker looked down on his feet and sighed, “of course, Adam,” he replied as he brought his head to stare at me, “but do not expect too much from us. We do not exactly have the best detectives out here,” Walker admitted.

Then its settled.

“Alright,” I stood straight with my arms crossed, “I will join your department,” the answer sounded cold, but it was a relief to finally have some purpose of struggling forward. “However,” I said with an icy tone, “the reason I am so interested in joining this police force is because I want to avenge against those that destroyed my home and killed everyone I loved,” Walker’s eyes widened as I continued, “and why in all places think that I would be a great detective?”

Chief Walker had a look of surprise on his face, “you do not need to know about that right now. Just remember that we are here to protect innocent people from any harm. So if you are ready, we can prepare some paperwork for you to sign before you join our team.” He took out a small notebook attached to a pen from his pocket and handed it over to me, “now if you may sit and begin the process…” he instructed.

So, I sat back down on the char, picking up the pen, I asked, “what am I supposed to put in here? My address and name or what?” I asked curiously. Walker shrugged his shoulders, “whatever suits you. But just write your name and address for us,” he explained.

I nodded, understanding, “alright,” I wrote down my information into the notebook, after which, I passed it back to him, expecting that was all I needed to do. However, Chief Walker shook his head, “no, there is one more thing,” he told me.

“What is that?” I questioned, confused. The chief scratched his chin in contemplation, “about your case as the world’s best psychologist, we need to have your agreement that you will abandon your identity from your previous life. If you agree, then we can proceed with the rest of the paperwork on my office desk.”

World’s best psychologist? Huh, I always liked hearing the name of that.

I stared at him blankly, not knowing how to respond. After some time, I eventually replied, “why? They were-“

He caught off my sentence and cut me short, “Adam, this isn’t about them anymore. This is about you. If the news report that you were only the sole survivor of the bombing incident and becoming a member of our station, our reputation will be further ruined by the public for having someone like you,” Walker said with a stern voice. “We do not need any more negativity or bad press right now, so we must act smart,” he added while tapping his index finger on the table.

My eyes widened for a moment before sighing, “alright, fine. I will change my identity if that is what you are asking,” I reluctantly agreed.

Walker grinned in satisfaction, “excellent. And your identity will not change, were just going to remove any records of you being associated with that facility and the victims who died there,” he informed me. “That is all you need to sign,” he concluded, handing me back my notebook.

“Count me in then,” I answered as I signed my name on the line of paper, resulting him to stand up with extended hand, offering me a handshake. “Welcome aboard, Detective Adam,” Walker told me while shaking hands.
