The events leading up to the 1901 NG Campaigns.
The person who will one day be known as Grindstaff the Gaunt is born in Seavale.
Viktor "Grindstaff" Nikolov (18) marries his longtime sweetheart, after graduating from the Mage Academy.
Grindstaff accidentally joins the Thieves Guild and realizes that it's not a job one can simply quit.
Grindstaff begins his obsession with Necrotech and the Defiled. His plans take shape.
A mysterious shipment travels from South Drak Isle, through Seavale, to Terra, via the Black Sun Trading Company.
This era includes the actions of the bands of adventurers known as 'The Undying' and the 'Red & Black'.
Adventurer's follow the faint trail of clues to Seavale, then to the Thieves Guild, and finally to the Defiled.
The Zamberians host a summit to seek heroes. The Undying and The Red & Black briefly meet. The Red & Black pick up where the Undying left off.
The Red & Black defeat Brackish Betty, a Night Hag, and recover the first Miasma Bomb.
The Red & Black become Champions of Terra and recover the third Miasma Bomb from the Elven village of Evynnflow.
The heroes arrive in the City-State of Southton, in search of Grindstaff's next Laboratory. Instead, they find a mysterious, but dashing, Ork named Axton who leads them towards Demonhead Island, a pleasure resort that Grindstaff seems to have frequented.
The Red & Black arrive on Demonhead island and search the tropical paradise for Grindstaff's laboratory. They were not prepared for what they would find.
The party reached Sideswipe Tower, met again with the Shadow Syndicate, and discovered a stone ruin that has some sort of magical connection to the Hag's mage tower they seek.
The Red & Black arrived at the mysterious Timelocked Tower, recently occupied by the Horncackle Hag Coven. The Hags soon laid dead and the heroes in control of a flying castle keep.
Under the control of a flying castle, the Red & Black return to the Spider Syndicate in Sideswipe Tower to plan their next course of action. The R&B checked in with the Silver King in Zamber, giving him a full account of their actions and discoveries over the last 5 months. Attaining Grindstaff's family's souls from the Thieves Guild was decided to be most critical next step, so the HMS Darkwynd and the flying castle were sent to the Defiled Lands, while the party teleported to Seavale to begin their search.
Guided by a holy vision, the R&B Investigate the local Church of Sol for the Soul Gems that contain the souls of Grindstaff's family. After running afoul of Houston Dykstra, a powerful aristocrat in Seavale, the R&B managed to retrieve the Gems and escape the city.
Teleporting back to their flying castle "SkyHaven" after parting ways with 'Brutal' Sanderson, the R&B discovered their sanctuary under siege. The Defiled members of the crew of the Darkwynd had gone murderous, slain the mortal crew, and were moments away from slaughtering Zephir, their Wind Wizard. After a bloody and prolonged battle, the R&D emerged victorious. Beatrix, via the power of Sol, Raised Bilge, their Orkish 1st Mate. Despite the grim victory, troubling questions remained... questions that may be answered by Lady D'Fyll, Queen of the Defiled.
The Red & Black make landfall on South Drak Isle at the abandoned port town of Vanth. Discovering signs of battle with in the ruined buildings, the party traveled north towards D'Kae. After experiencing the twisted, mutated, undead horrors of the Miasma, they eventually reached the outskirts of the capital city. With the city under siege by the Traitorous Defiled, the R&B battled an Alhoon, its BoneClaw servant, and a few ghouls. In a close fight, the Alhoon decided to escape once outnumbered, despite seemingly having the tactical advantage.
After tending their wounds, the R&B then arrived at the center of town, to the Cathedral and the seat of power of Lady De'Fyll. After being ushered into the inner sanctum by the Faceless, the party explained their plan to use the Soul Gems and the preserved bodies of his wife and daughter to convince (threaten?) Grindstaff to assist them against Quantus the Traitor. Lady De'Fyll explained the relationship between Quantus and Grindstaff... Grindstaff discovered a way to create more Defiled and Quantus created a way to control them. Together, they were an existential threat.
After some debate on how to best utilize the leverage they now have over Grindstaff the Gaunt, the Red & Black used Sending to arrange a meeting with him at Eyespur Tower. Despite some aggressive precautions they took to protect themselves, the party explained that they have possession over the objects that the mad necromancer was willing to ravage the world to attain: the soulgems that contain the spirits of his wife and daughter.
At the conclusion of some tense back and forth negotiations, the R&B eventually handed over the soulgems and the zombified bodies of Grindstaff's family over to him. The necromancer seemed to acknowledge this act of good faith and promised to speak to the party again in 24 hours... and then teleported away with his family.
As promised, Viktor Nikolov (Grindstaff the Gaunt) contacted the Red & Black and offered to teleport them as close to Quantus the Traitor's location as possible. The party found themselves in a rugged, alpine valley, dominated by a massive, inverted mountain floating the sky, secured by massive adamantine chains.
Calling upon her powerful connection to nature, Wren the Druid transformed the party into fleet wind spirits who screamed into the sky, towards the citadel that sat atop the flouting mountain.
Evading the strange, morphing Citadel's automated defenses, the party arrived at the center of the citadel.
Facing, and defeating, the Alhoon and a squad of ghouls, caused the path deeper into the bowels of the Citadel to reveal itself. The heroes descended.
