Howard Crane is a young man who has recently left school and is now working at the University Shoe Shop as an apprentice cobbler. He’s picking up a fair degree of knowledge about shoes in general as a result, and he is gaining the ability to really judge a person by their shoes, going by how much they would have cost and what condition they are in. In addition, he is also getting to know just where someone might have been walking, going by the dirt that could be found on the soles of shoes in need of repair. Sometimes the dirt seems rather peculiar.
