The Unnamable House - 188 N Boundary Street

This early seventeenth century house was rescued from dilapidation and disintegration by the New Jerusalem Historical Society - 537 S Garrison St. Since no current ownership of the house can be found on any legal records, the place belongs to the city and is maintained by the Historical Society as representative of early New England architecture. The Society refurbished the old house thanks to a generous state preservation grant, or so says the Society’s brochure.   A site of bizarre psychic emanations, something horrible once lived and died in the attic of this house, the product of a 17th century wizard. The skull of the monster was said to be interred by Randall Carver, along with the rest of its skeleton, in an unmarked, slate-slab-covered tomb in the Old Wooded Graveyard; it was semi-human but bore four-inch horns.   The man who owned the house was buried in 1710 near the unmarked slate slab in the Old Wooded Graveyard. The house was left deserted, the attic door still locked. Despite strange noises and rustlings coming from the place, none dared enter.   In 1793 a boy, looking for evidence of the thing, was driven inexplicably mad after entering the house alone.   This 'unnamable' being is mentioned in Cotton Mather's demonic sixth book as "the thing with the blemished eye, more than beast, but less than a man." This thing, before the death of its keeper, was rumored to prowl at night, peeking in windows, and once a post rider saw it being pursued over Meadow Hill by an unknown man.   The house is open intermittently for tours by the Historical Society; otherwise it is kept locked up. Evening passers-by sometimes remark on a feeling of being watched, especially from a high, diamond paned window. Despite refurbishment, the place does look spooky, so such reports are passed off as the result of over-active imaginations.
