Rheuthen Basin

Tucked up against the Rheuthengage Mountains and curling around the northwest shores of the Sea of Storms, this westernmost stretch of the Great Belt sees little rain except during fall monsoons. During these massive storms, the dry earth sucks down rainfall, turning the amber grasses green overnight and swelling the regions rivers to point of flooding. At seasons end, the grass slowly dries again until, browning completely except by the coasts, leaving the plains susceptible to wild fires. Fortunately, the proximity to the warmer waters of the Sea of Storms moderates temperatures, keeping the basin relatively warm and snow free even in the coldest months.

Over the years, human habitation has begun to change the character of the plains greatly. Irrigation canals along the basin’s many rivers provide water for vast farms of wheat. Further away from these reliable water sources, great herds of cattle and sheep graze under the watchful eyes of Grennig and Mennithite herders, consuming the grasses that once fed herds of antelope and buffalo, which are now only found along the regions fringes. With the vanishing herd animals, and due to hunting by ranchers protecting their livestock, predators have also nearly vanished.
