Caladon Settlement in Tarien | World Anvil

Caladon

Located in the foothills of the Rheuthengage Mountains, the squat stone and timber buildings of this small village show flakes where paint peels and ruddy stains where water damage has started to crumble the masonry. Arranged haphazardly around a pair of wells, there are two constants in the village, smoke and stench. Both are the result of hundreds of years of two industry that have stained the soil burnt orange and teeth of its people ochre.

The tanning of hides first drew settlers to the area as trappers would return with pelts from deer, rabbits, beaver, raccoons and other creatures from the surrounding hills for curing and sale. A small processing industry has blossomed over the years, providing steady work and yielding fine leather and fur garments for transport down the River to Grennig.

It was only years later as the furriers traveled deeper into the mountains to find deposits of copper, silver, tin and iron, that the second industry took hold. Finding that they fetched a far better price at market for brass and steel than raw metals, local miners built their own smelting facilities. While these hot and smokey foundries certainly lined the pockets of their owners, they also lined the waters of the river with an orange-green tint that doesn't disappear until its waters have flowed a dozen leagues south into the Rheuthen Basin.
